Could be interested in getting a track car with my brother was looking at getting a XTR2/westie/caty.
Dont want to mess about building just want to put it on a trailor and race it.

For that sort of money i would say your best bet would be a second hand Radical these things are soooooooooo fast you would have to spend over 30k to get a Caty R500 to go anywhere near as fast, ive done loads of track days over the last year and the one's i've seen have been very reliable infact there are two guys who share one and that means its out every session of every track day it never goes wrong also it's still on it's first set of brake pads after over 20 track days.

I would look for a westfield as the prices for consumables are resonable as they are off other cars, mainly Ford and being light you dont need serious bhp and brakes wont run out. Even the mpg wont be too bad. As well as track days you can always sprint it as well as there is a big westfield sprinting scene.

Dude if your serious about a track car there is a company on the BEC list aiming to produce a fireblade light weight car (380kg)_ for around 4.5k Its very exciting at the moment and looks to be a bit of a bargain. You could pocket the cash for mods or even got 2?

The XTR2 is a great track car (I am a little biased mind )
Take a look at at this to see what happened when we took ours to donington at the weekend.
If you want to do lots of trackdays something like a westi or cateringvan will work a treat - the whole point of these cars is they are light and nimble. They don't give the same wear on tyres and brakes like a road car (even an ex-touring car) and are cheap to run. We only used £32 of fuel in one day - tyres brakes etc will be fine for many more trackdays.
Ian.

I was at Silverstone last week and there was an Ex-Cleland factory BTCC Cavalier there....Complete nightmare to run
It need warming up to 65 deg before starting, the guy driving had a problem with gearbox (had have the gearbox off....£18000 for a new !) There was 2 guys looking after it and one guy driving.
Didn't look ideal !

Thanks for your replies everyone i was just wondering, are the bike engines more reliable than the normall car engines.
Looking for something that will take a lot of hammer but be reliable at the same time.

I bought a 2.0 16v Vauxhall engined Caterham 2 years ago with a mate. Its a solid lump which is far less likely to go bang than a BEC or a K series but the compromise is that it is a bit heavier and not as nimble under braking or through tighter corners.
It produces about 200bhp and is very quick round track - only things quicker are the hard core track machines such as the Caterham R500 and the Radical type cars all costing a lot more money.
Its proved a great buy - apart from regular servicing plus many oil changes (and even more rear tyres )its only required a new clutch. We've done over 7,000 miles in it, well over half of which must have been on track.
We paid £12,000 for it and its not worth much less than that now.
If you're taking a Caterfield on track make sure you get one with as much safety as possible - at least full harness belts and an uprated roll bar - The Caterham club recommend the FIA bar as a minimum. The standard roll bars are shockingly inadequate on Caterhams and Westfields. We've got a full cage on ours.
Look out for other desirable safetly features such as electrical cut-outs, strengthened sides/side bars, re-enforced fuel tanks, etc.
There's usually some nice track machinery turning up for sale at

Do you mean "race it" at track days, or something which can actually enter a series and race (as well as doing track days) ?

if you're thinking of racing then (IMO) you've got to think which series you'd race it in - there's no point spending 20K on a gazillion bhp cosworth engined caterham then find that either no series will have you, or your in with big budget teams or its just too expensive to race the thing. Also, I'd suggest something more conservative is better for racing than you might buy if you're just track daying it. A radical prosport sounds great, at a track day you'll be the fastest on the track but as a first race car it may be a bit much.
I guess the first question is rwd or fwd, saloon or sports ? if rwd is your thing then something like the caterham graduates or roadsports (1.8 k-series if i remember right), if saloons then 6 - 8K will pick you up a very sorted 205 type thing or a porche 924 or maybe something out of the bmw kumho series (there's a very sorted looking 325 on the BARC site for £9500)
that hasnt really helped at all has it ?

My mate is selling his Tiger with Honda Blackbird power, I gave him your details dont know if he contacted you? Its a real stunner with all the flashest bits going, and a brand new trailer, I think it all cost over 25K last year, he would take 15.5K!
mail me if he youre interested and he hasnt mailed you!

ADR1000, as seen in this month's CCC.
www.adr-engineering.co.uk
Looks pretty good for sure.
Edit to say you are looking at maximum of £12k for a brand new one.
