I had my mates Jap import for a few weeks and a few thousand miles....it's not a sports car, more like a GT. Pretty heavy, doesn't handle all that well and reasonably quick in a straight line.

I liked it though and in red it had the look of a mini F355.

I take it they are heavy then.
Always fancied one as I love the styling
I also thought they were very quick with minimal tuning ??

I'm not saying they aren't quick- the car felt subjectively a lot faster than my UK Scoob. Just that it didn't feel at home on country lanes in the UK. It was great on the motorway though (until it maxed out at 112MPH). Nice wrap around cabin- huge transmission tunnel and a "feel good" factor due to its rarity back in the mid-90's when I had the use of one.

yeah, I suppose it's more of a grand tourer, due to its size/weight.
I'm not too bothered about the twisties, after owning a scoob for 2 years, I never pushed that round the country lanes anyway, as you don't know what's @ the other side

I fancy taking one of these out for a test drive to see what they are like.

don't handle?

you must be a pansy driver the only way you'll lose one of these is if you bottle it.

They go round corners like they are on rails 4WD 4WS active areo traction control, diffs and christ knows what else to keep you on the road, the problem is they do all the work and you don't get any feeling of what the hell is going on, next time you drive one be brutal (that's what they were built for) it's much more a supercar than most people think!

your right- it was my mates car and I didnt dare give it any real stick on the bendy bits. So I guess I wasnt brutal enough with it. As you mention they don't give you an incredible amount of feedback either. Also would like to stress I did like the car -it just felt big n heavy (and quick)

GTO's are renound for their 'crap' handling as standard. In my opinion a Skyline or Supra would be far the better buy.

GTO's are not known for crap handling at all. They are known for having very bland driving charactristics which give the driver no sense of involvement.

I wouldnt describe the handling of the one I drove as crap- a Metro is crap- the GTO drove very nicely-it just wasn't a light car thats all.

I tested the GTO but to be honest I didn't like the interior and lack of headroom.
So I tested the Nissan 300ZX TT and ended up buying one of those instead, superb handling and a real drivers car.

Does feel big on UK roads though, but doesn't feel like 1.5 Tonnes of car.

It's lighter and shorter than the GTO.

Brrrm Brrrm, loads of bangs for the money, chaps I know say its dead easy to mod for more power as they run a low boost in standard spec, as mentioned above 4wd 4ws and the one I drove oversteered.

The one I drove at the track had 420bhp, you had to launch it below 3500rpm or you lost all traction with all 4 wheels spinning, right the way through 2nd.

Here in the clip the GTO and the R34 (400bhp) can't get traction, the R33 (400bhp) was slipping his clutch abit. The GTO does get away a bit quicker in the end, later in the day I got off the line quickest in the GTO by launching it just above 3000rpm, good car under power it oversteered on the corners, the gearbox was a bit notchy.
