Paul,
My brother had 1, twin-cam, very nice in black and it was defo a Honda engine in it. I had a 216 GTi single cam 3 door and it was also a Honda motor.
I think people are being confused with the 220 GTi/Coupe/Turbo model which AFAIK is a rover unit.
I thrashed the living daylights out of mine for about 1 1/2 yrs and absolutely nothing went wrong, it loved to sing at 7K
Pretty sure it's a Honda unit ..
Doofus.

the 2 litre is not a K series. Either an M series (to about 92/93) then changed to a T series. AFAIK The 1.6 K series are in the later Rovers (Mk3 200 onwards) when Rover's collaboration with Honda ended.

In the old 200/400 series which was available upto 1995/6 the engines available were:-
1.4 K-series Rover
1.6 OHC Honda
1.6 DOHC Honda
2.0 T16 Rover n/a and turbo
plus diesel engines from PSA n/a and turbo.
After the change to the new Rover 200/25 and the 400/45, the 1.6 Honda engine was replaced with 1.6 K-series.

Caterhams are all K series Rover engines for the last 2 years or so, now rebadged as MG X-power.
Come in 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 1.8VVC flavours from Rover and tuned 1.8 VHPD from Minister in the top of the range R500 models.
