Evo did a shoot out with one of these and a Caterham R300 a few issues back. Amazingly, this 2 tonne Merc stops and accelerates at rates which are alarmingly close to the 500kg Caterham. Amazing technology.

How old was it, as there have been two different variants.

Earlier S55 AMG's were n/a 5.5 V8's with 367bhp, the current versions have a supercharged 5.5 V8 with 500bhp.

Out of interest Mercedes-Benz have an announed a new S65 AMG with the 5.5 V12 twin-turbo of the S600 being stretched to 6.5 litres, producing 600bhp and 737lb ft torque, which will get it rolling along quite nicely I would say.

Autocar recently did an acceleration test with the S600L, versus the Ferrari F360. The results they obtained showed the S600 to be only very slightly slower than the F360.

To be honest, I was using an S500 limo every day last year, only just over 300bhp, and it was quicker than my STi7 in a straight line. Sold both now.

The Caterham test was the SL55 not S55 - same near 500bhp Supercharged 5.5 V8, but in bit of a different package

These big power Mercs are weather changing quick in a straight line, and the sportier ones getting better in the twisties. My M-Class has a modest 290bhp V8 and whilst horrendous in the twisties, in a straight line will stun the hot hatch brigade! You just can't beat cubic inches ...and a V8 soundtrack

I've got an old shape 500E, which is devastatingly fast in a straiht line, but completely and utterly humbled by the new 5.5 Supercharged one !
