Jaguar XJR - any ideas?

As usual doing some research for the 'next' car (I do this even when I've just bought a new car .. drives the wife mental).
Current thinking is done the mad Turbo Impreza thing, look at something that doesn't have to be modded (my Scoob has cost me the best part of 2 grand on top of purchase price to get it to the state I am happy with) .. so lets look at nice easy power and luxury.
What about the Jaguar XJR, 4 litre, supercharged, power and luxury? Anybody have any experience of one?
The way I see it ..
Purchase price - I can spend 18K and get an XJR (the same will only buy a 1yr old MY03 or an MY02 PPP - dealer prices)
Fuel consumption - both 20-ish
Servicing costs - my Scooby costs me about 600 a year, surely the Jag can't be much more than that (1 service, not 2)
Insurance - I've checked it out, I'm cheaper with the Jag
The only thing I can see against the Jag is if something major goes wrong, big expense? Saying that running a modded Scooby is probably a similar risk to the Jag.
Anybody see any flaws? Apart from driving a different type of car what's the catch?
Doofus.

Fuel consumption 'horsing' it will be more like 12-15MPG, 18-20 round town and 24mpg on a run so down on a Scoob IMHO
Did not like the seats, you sit on them rather than in them, not much rear leg room.
great engine and handles for a big barge!
cost a fecking fortune to service at a Jag dealers, they charge you £6.00 for a lint free dipstick cleaning cloth just check the oil!!!
Oh and scoob will 'have it' on the twistes as long as it is in front going into them, a well driven XJR will stay ahead as it has loads of torque and power.
All imho of course

Doofus,
I have had a 1999 XJR for 18 months, it's up for sale if you interested! I will post some pictures later as turbosport is down.
The XJR is a fantastic car to drive, it is super quick and very well built. There is a engine problem on certain models, I have had 2 engines fitted in the past 6 months, both were done hush hush because Jaguar will not admit that there is a problem with one of their engines!!!
I was assured that the problem has now been solved and the second engine has only done 2500 miles, the car also has 11 months warrenty remaining. The car has done 45500 miles and has a full Jag service history.
Email me if your interested and I can forward some pictures!

dominicm .. much as I'd like to I'm not in the current market to change my car .. I'm afraid my duaghters creche fees are seeing to that .. possibly in about 6-9 months time though.
I suppose I'd get at least 1 yr warranty with a dealer on the XJR.
I kinda figured a Scoob would be quicker round the bends on a country road. I know which one I'd rather be in on a motorway trip though
So far nobody has come up with any flaws

Save yourself a fortune and buy privately and buy a warranty. A few companies do this (and will be the same that Jag use if the car is out of manufacturer warranty).

I brought mine privately and saved about 5K compared to the dealers, the car was just out of the 3 year warrenty so I paid for an extra 2 years warrenty with Jaguar, this cost me £1100 and has proved to be money well spent!
The car is nothing like a Subaru, you really can't compare them! The XJR handles pretty well for a car that weights nearly 2 tonnes and is about 2 foot longer than your average saloon!! It is also very quick, it does 150mph in 4th at the redline of 6000rpm, in top gear at 3000 rpm your doing 100mph...very relaxed!
IMHO, the car is very uninvolving to drive and leaves me very unsatisfied, but if you have to drive for any lenght of time or distance the car is perfect as it covers miles with ease.
I manage about 15-18mpg on average!

A friend of mine is just going the other way - from XJR to Scooby...
The XJR was quickish, broke lots (seems too happen to most XJR's around the 4-5 year/60-80k mark) and cost a small fortune in petrol - 18mpg on the motorway, less round town/taking it easy!
He just sold a 70k/1997 car which was sound but not mint for under £10k, dealers were offering more like £7-8k - at that price cheap, but IMHO not a great way to spend £18k.

About to get an XKR from a family member, run for 3 years and no problems whatsoever (except stonechips at the front).
Has had regular services, dealership has driven down to collect and leave replacement car while service work being done.
OK it has lost a shed load in value but is immaculate throughout and whilst it has a supercharger etc, no rattles or squeaks.
Sound performance from the engine, and in my eyes is a beautifully styled car.
Believe the XKR engine is the same so if you want some class and style go for it.
