At that price a Volvo's probably your best bet for longevity / reliability etc. The 740 turbos actually go quite well, but they handle like drunk pigs on skates ....

You can get some really big relatively modern Mercedes stuff for way less than £2500 now.

Plus points:

1) Built like a King Tiger Tank
2) So methodically styled even the old ones never look different from the new ones
3) Cheap as mess on parts (surprisingly)
4) Diesels are OK to drive
5) Very good Auto Boxes
6) Quiet & Refined.

FFS do not get a Renault 21 Savanna. Mate has one as a general hack/workhorse/filthy destroyed engine mover - it has to be one of the work examples of automotive engineering ever. Truly terrible.

Shame you haven't got £3k as someone near me has a Toyota Previa auto on an M plate, done about 75k miles (or thereabouts)...

The Mercs/volvos seem quite cheep in the papers.
All have over 100k on the clock. Any major engine probs I should be looking out for? This applies to Mercs & Volvos.
Cheers,
Mark.

Hey! ... less of that really desperate stuff please. Not for nothing the best selling estates in the 1980-1990s. Reasonable ones can still be picked up for loose change with good MoT and maybe even some tax. The turbo-diesels are nippy and economical but go for the EFis if you want to more than keep up with the traffic flow. If you only want to go with the flow, the 1.6's are adequate. Well cared for tidy examples are about but these will go for much more ... maybe above 1000 quid even ...

Like so many ARG-MG-R products, under-rated by many .... their loss! A surpisingly pleasant drive unlike the Volvo barges and similar heavy metal.

Mitsubishi spacethingy. Seriously unsexy unless you consider reliability, economy and space to be sexy. You'll get a loaded one with fsh for that if you look hard.
