Bought a Sharan towards the end of last year, its a 115 PD, now VW bring out a 130 engined model which begs the question why it wasnt available so equipped last year ?

Anyone have any idea what the differences are between the PD engines as they all look pretty much the same, 100,115,130,150 ?

Eventually VW will phase out the lower spec engines in favour of the 130/150 models.
The 130 was probably fitted only to the Passat and Golf initially to guage reactions.

I dont think they will phase them out, people still want the lower insurance, Mr bro in law bought a PD100 Golf in favour of the others as he didnt need the power (they all make similar torque considering the big power differences) as did my mother in law, they drive really nicely and to be honest 95% of the time you dont notice the deficit.

What I am interested in is the tech difference between the various models, I think the 150 has a bigger intercooler but as for the others ?

Howdy,

I think the 150s have stronger conrods to cope with the additional boost they run.

Must be some more differences as they all seem to chip by about 30 bhp but you cant get a 115 up to 160 bhp like you can a 130, I was thinking between the 115/130 that it might just be a software change (like the Audi S3)

From memory, the injection pressure was raised between 115 and 130.

The 130 and 150 remap to similar numbers (180ish, 300lbs.ft ish), the 115 a little behind (160ish bhp). As Iain says, 150 apparently has stronger conrods.

To quote Evo Magazine:

"The hike from the previous model's 130bhp to 150bhp, and from 228 to 235lb ft is down to three main factors – a bigger boost from the variable-vane turbo, a more efficient intercooler and a better design of injector nozzle which results in a more efficient mixture burn."

From lurking on ukmkivs.net, the intercooler on the 130 Golfs is much smaller than the 150, I believe it's ahead of the nearside front wheel.

On the 150 the IC is a unit with the engine coolant radiator and aircon radiator ... same as Volvos and Saabs.

The 150 has some internal differences and the turbo has titanium vanes or something. It has an FMIC as well, so basically what people have already said. Here's a plot or my 130 engine from a rolling road session on Sunday past (in an Ibiza - zipped pdf file).
