Evening all.

I am thinking of investing on one of these cars later this year, but i am a bit dubious about the noise.

Now I don't mind the sound of a nice engine and zorst, but reading up on specs i read that its stripped of all sound proofing to save weight.

Does anyone own a Teg, and if so can they comment on what they are like to own, drive, live with etc.

I would appreciate if anyone can supply a sound clip or video of one on full song?

I don't want much eh?

my M8 had one loud as hell, but he liked it. REV baby REV. gos round corner quite well too.

Its really not that bad, suppose its what you're used to really.
I always enjoyed driving my Teg, used it every day to work, lots of motorway journeys, and even did 1500 miles in 5 days two up without it being a pain.

Its raw, but this is where it gets difficult. To me, raw is a positive thing, I enjoy that, and in two years of owning it, I didnt tire of it. Some people may find raw too unpleasant to live with, but we're not exactly talking Caterhams here.

The seats are very comfortable, unless you're fat, and although the ride is very stiff, it communicates like nothing else.

Everything on the car was aimed more towards an enthusiast, so its obvious compromises were made to comfort, but noise levels arent too bad below VTEC, thou I didnt spend much time below VTEC

Amazing cars, and excellent value for money, definitely worth at least a test drive, and im sorry, but people who find them too compromised for everyday use, should get a BMW or Golf and fade away into the flood of mundane cars that may as well be couches.

Hmm, not a fan of red cars. Would prefer a black one.

I don't mind paying good cash for a good car, but being new to hondas, what are the common problems with them.

The engines are fairly solid are they not?

I'll get back to you on your mates car.

I have owned noisy cars all through my driving career, but road noise is very different to engine noise, which i don't mind at all.

Problems???

Very few.

Check that the syncros are OK, ie don't crunch otherwise expect to pay £600.

Thats about it really, apart from the usual.

My brother's Teg is a fantastic car all round but a bit noisy for sure. Fine for local roads but I personally wouldn't wanna commute in one, even cruising at 70mph it ain't quiet!

His mate has one with induction kit and cat back system that sounds the DBs when you're 'hanging in the V-tec'!! I think a long journey in that would be well harsh!

They are pretty unbreakable, but get one thats been regullaly serviced, and always been topped with oil, and it should run without a prob.

I used mine, by that I mean, Honda gave it VTEC, so I VTEC'd it whenever possible. It got driven like it should have been, and I never had a single problem in mine, and it was a '98, so one of the first lot that was sold in the UK.

I drove mine for 6 hours to Nurburgring, at lets say, decent speeds , put it onto 4 laps of the ring, and drove back for 6 hours, and it didnt even hickup at that, it started first time everytime in all two years, never had it back to a garage for any problems at all.

Thats my experience of the cars, my mate has one too, his has also not given probs, except for a rear wheel bearing, so put the windows down and listen for a humming sound when running.

Only other thing I noticed, was most Tegs Ive driven give a rubbing sound at around full lock, it doesnt appear to be anything serious thou, not a ps motor or anything.

The Teg is a fantastic car, without a doubt, I had one for nearly 3 years, and now have a CTR, as far as the noise goes, as has been said, yes it is, most of the soundproofing has been removed, the windscreen is thinner glass, but you get used to it, the daft thing I found was that at low speeds, you always felt you were shifting, because of the way the car communicated everythgin back to you, and the noise.

Reliability, I never had any problems with mine, the only thing that wasn't a problem, was the clutch seemed to have a click every now and again, which appears to be more of a pedal/cable problem, and seems pretty common, it just needs regreasing, occured on my at around 30-40K miles, the only other niggle I had was the electric aerial, didn't break or fail, just needed some oil etc once and a while, but that would be the same with any electric aerial.

Cheap to run, but beware of insurance (grp 18), not much pull below 5500rpm, but when the cam changes, you're pinned in your seat all the way.

There isn't much if any space for people in the back, leg room is very restrictive, so don't expect to run 4 adults around.

Look for rear quarter damage, as they can (if provoked) be a tad tail happy, so check that out, a common thing to look for is on the rear bumper, below the fog light, there is an indented strip, painted black, if the bumper/back end has seen some action, most just get painted and the strip ends up changing from black to white/red etc, guess that would be hard to tell if it were black anyway.

If I was asked which would I rather have, a Teg, or a CTR I'd probably pick the TEG, or moreso the new Teg !

Oh yeah, I forgot, my clutch went, errr, dont think it was the cars fault thou, during a heavy pulloff the one day it started letting go, changed it myself with some mates, and found a big piece of metal in there that had snappped off!?

So when you test drive one, give the clutch a bit of a workout, but dont think its a major problem with it occuring, and cot about £250 to completely replace doing it myself.

Ran one for a year and a bit, 2000 model:-



Fantastic car. They are not as noisy and harsh as people make out day to day. Did everything, motorway miles, cross country, round the city all with no problem. The think was bombproof - not one single fault in 12 months.

At high revs and on full throttle, yes they are noisy, but what a noise. Remember these things rev higher than touring cars.

Handling was fantastic - better that my previous scoob - and the biggest misconception is that they are gutless below 6000 rpm.

Thats rubbish, due to light weight, low gearing and fantastic drivetrain always felt urgent and ready to go.

Only downside was the traction, esp around town, junctions, etc, in the wet. No problems at all in the dry.

Drive one, you won't look back.

Well, i think its more or less conclusive.

I shall bw looking at a teg this year. new one or old one. New one is 220 brake innit?

Can only add to previous comments. Fantastic cars, the engine's are just amazing, I also think it is unfair to say they lack grunt below 5500rpm - bear in mind they weigh the same as a Puma, have low gearing and a reasonable amount of torque.
The noise levels are nothing to unbearable either.

I've yet to drive a FWD car that has handling to match it, the more committed you are the better it gets - really very impressive and very adjustable.

Mine has given me no trouble whatsoever, if you're using the vtec zone regularly (and you bloody well should be ) then check the oil often. Check for worn synchro - do some quick high rpm changes and also try going from 2nd to 5th etc.

Also, avoid any with different wheels from the standard 15's - they might look a bit weedy but putting 17's (or bigger) on messes with the handling. Note that the JDM models had 16inch wheels but with revised suspension geometry.

I got fed up with the noise and rock hard suspension mine after about 3 or 4 months. Bloody great car though. Replaced it with an Accord R (now sold) which is just as fast, but comfier.

Top cars, wish I could have kept mine, they arnet half as loud as people make out (I commuted 100 miles daily), and handling is awesome. They are also quicker 100-130 than a 280hp Pro-Drive converted 1998 Impreza as the owner of one I raced openly admitted.

I SO want a new Teg to replace the CTR. But if Honda Uk won't play ball and I can't be bothered with the hastle of importing, then I'll be off to RX land soon.

Standard brakes on the 1.8 Inegra R are sliding calipers, not 4 pots, but IIRC were as fitted to the NSX.

Honda seem to be able to create excellent brakes. Much better than the Scoob 4 pot (non brembo) system.

The Teg brakes are only single pot sliding calipers. But they work very well !
They use the same pads as the NSX but that's the only thing they really have in common.
But stopping power isn't really a worry with decent pads

I have owned mine for 2 1/2 years and cant imagine trading it for anything sensible. I looked at scoobies before buing but went with the teg as its a more involving driving experience. The noise is not a problem at all and an induction kit is highly advised! Mine runs an HKS header, cat replacement, straight through b pipe and a Spoon sports N1 back box. Now that is LOUD. Suspension is pretty tough around town but its not unbearable. I am (when i can afford it) getting LEDA coilovers so its going to get harder....
Down a twisty B-Road the teg is amazing. I'v driven many many performance cars and very few give you the accessible fun of the teg. Others may be faster and grip more but they are not as much actual FUN. The diff stops the fronts spinning, (stick to Bridgestone SO2s for winter and/or RE010 for summer) the tail can be played with nicely and its balance and poise are impeccable. Check the oil regularly, tyre wear on the front can be bad, and enjoy.
Brakes are amazing but a pad change is a good idea. Evo gave it 5 stars...

Go through a decent length tunnel at 9000rpm and then sign on the dotted line!

I do think the 15" wheels look very feeble though. Can you put 17's on there and have the geometry doen to compensate?

17s are not a good idea as the upset the balance on the limit. JDM cars from 98 on came with 16s and revised geometry.
It looks fine on 15s... Its a racing car not a poseur! lol

Actually, having run both, its probably fair to say that the Teg is much closer to being a "racing car for the road" than the scoob is to being a "rally car for the road"

Agreed, it looks fine on the 15's. Plus tyres are cheap and wheels don't get kerbed.

Grip and balance are fine - only advantage to 17's would be pose value - and thats not what a 'Teg is all about.

The new Teg type R DC5 has 4 pot brembo brakes... and LSD to help it out.. well at least mine does !!!
