E55 AMG old shape handling?
#1
These can be had for sub 30K from Merc dealers with less than 50k on the clock. Warp speed acceleration for sure, space, grace, and subtle image too.....but can anyone who's driven one tell me about how they handle? They look to me to be the answer to the mid - 30's profesional plus family but-still-want-massive-performance but doesnt want to pay £50k dilemma.

Short answer on how they handle:
They don't
It's a very big car with a lot of power I drove an AMG about 5 years ago and it was like a missile in a straight line. Very difficult to place round the twisties though and you were always aware of the bulk. To it's credit it did hide the weight slightly better than I thought it might and it did handle quite flat. I however found the experience a bit numb in the corners (if you can ignore the fear of being overtaken by the rear wheels)
Hope this helps.

Find me a '98 37,000 mile M5 for £23k then...... cos thats what my local Merc dealers selling on for. They're about 8-10k cheaper year on year. I'm thinking about one too

I used to have an bug-eye E320 with genuine AMG suspension + alloys - handling-wise it was a bit of a handful really. It felt very out of it's depth on anything other than sweeping curves - forget B-roads!
However... straight-line was entertaining I kept up with my old scoob (like side-by-side) until 90mph in it! Oh, plus it would make traction control get a bit giddy if you hoofed it at 90! Bet a 55 would be mega ;-)
Best car I ever had to be honest... quick, great build quality, massive, fast and economical - wouldn't hesitate to get another one.
/m
p.s. What about getting a C43 AMG - fast as ****!

Petrol consumpution on the E55 shouldnt be too bad (the old one, not the new supercharged one). I have an older 500E, with essentialy the same V8 as the E55 and that returns about 20mpg day to day, and about 28mpg on a cruise.
(On track it was low single figures though!!!)
