Replaced my P1 with a PD150 (and a westfield xtr2 )
I paid £18200 for a fully loaded import with leather and all the trimmings 7 months ago. Just have a look at http://www.broom-broom.com and moterpoint and other big car import farms.
so far its done 17000 miles in that time averaging 48.9 to the gallon by the computers reckoning (even though the trip resets at 10000 I kept an I on changes). Managed to stay 1/2 a car length on a new WRX from 80-120mph so its no slouch - just average mind numbing handling characteristics. All in all - not a bad car - nice place to be with heated seats and all.

The PD150 engine was minor mods over the PD130 which is supposed to make it rattle more like a diesel than the other models.
Apart from that, the car's the star, with incredible torque figures and economy.
I'd go for the 130 and chip it.

Just a quick Q. I drove the diesel PD150 and it was a great car- I then drove the 180BHP petrol version which was a much much better car. My friend has the petrol and reckons he gets 30MPG on average.
So the diesel does 20MPG more on average- but is definately slower, less refined and you have to use the stinky pump used by van drivers (yuck- I hate wearing those gloves!). It also costs at least 1.5K more (import prices). You can buy a hell of a lot of petrol for 1.5K so why not buy a petrol and enjoy better performance? Also the neighbours won't think a taxi, delivery van etc has arrived when u start the thing in the morning
The only reasons I can think of for the diesel is that it will depreciate less and be easier to sell cos for some reason everyone wants a diesel these days. They are blinded by fuel economy when you should really work out the TCO (total cost ownership). If u do this you will find the diesel is actually more expensive unless you keep it for at least 5 yrs.
I have nothing against diesels- if the purchase price was the same I would be down at the derv pump!
They really only make sense here in Europe where diesel is taxed at a much lower rate- in fact in Portugal the diesel is the equivalent of about 48p a ltr!!!!!!

Minor mods were internal engine revisions to allow the power hike to 150 from 130.
Doesn't the 180PS petrol share the same suspension etc as the 130 and 150 GT-TDI?
I think you can at least specify the larger alloys and "sports" suspension on the diesel versions as extras.

the handling was vastly different(read better on 180 petrol it had the sports suspension option)- maybe the xtra weight of the diesel over the nose affects the handling-should improve traction though.
No one seems to be able to explain why diesels are preferable to petrol though- like I said it only makes economic sense if you keep the car for many yrs due to extra purchase price, additional diesel tax premium, servicing costs etc. If a company vehicle then the diesel begins to make sense cos of Co2 based tax.
Also I suppose if you do journeys of 400 miles plus regularly cos the diesel has a 500 mile range.

I've got a PDI130 and I'm very happy with it on the whole, although mpg isn't what I'd hoped for (averaged about 42 in the 3500 miles since new). I paid £14800 for a brand new import from Trade Sales, it doesn't have leather or heated seats, but has most other goodies (rain sensitive wipers, cruise, climate, auto-dimming rear-view mirror etc). It should hold its value well (I hope!) Performance is pretty brisk with a BIG wedge of torque available from low down. Handling is average for a family car - it might be worth going for the sports suspension. Ride quality is excellent compared to the Scoob - you can take speed bumps without noticing them at all. Build quality is superb - interior materials are all top quality, controls and switches all feel excellent. External paint and trim makes the Scoob look distinctly 3rd world! Just don't expect to stand out from the crowd.

There are pro's and con's with every car
I owned my Scoob for 18 months and loved every minute of it
I recently purchased a second hand Golf GT TDI 110 in December and think it's also an excellent car.
What's are the differences between them? List Below:
1) Exhaust -
Scooby: Loved the sound of the Scooby especially after I fitted a Magnex 6 x 4 Oval back box on & looked to dogs. Made me smile every minute!! (The noise).
Golf: Carn't even see the twin downpipe back box hidden behind the rear bumper valance..It also sounds like a bag of hammers when you boot it (Not once crusing though, it does'nt even sound like a diesel.
2) Street Cred./Nick-a-bility
Scooby: Plenty of street cred, everyone looked and could here the car Afraid it would get nicked, could'nt leave it anywhere! Valve caps always got nicked & Kids would hover around it...
Golf: Looks nice, more of a small executive car a bit like a poor mans BMW with the same build quality. Still paranoid about leaving it anywhere but not as bad as the Scooby (That's the type of person I am though.
3) Drivability
Scooby: Excellent performance even on a standard Scoob. Tended to die off after about 80mph (Mates UK 6-Speed Supra just keeps going). Excellent cruiser especially on country roads.
Golf: Excellent mid-range performance. Yes you do loose out on the 0-60, 0-100 1/4 mile time, but how often did I do these anyway. Excellent cruiser also with less wind noise (car has door frames).
4) Handling
Scoob: Rally proven handling, sit's like it on rails
Golf: Too high, a set of lowering springs will sort that out
5) Servicing
Scooby: £500 minimum per year on a '97 UK Turbo. You have to replace four tyres at a time and more frequently. Parts expensive! £90 for front discs!
Golf: £200 maximum per year. Parts probably about the same to purchase as the Scoob maybe less. You can keep swaping the front tyres with the rears to be more cost effective.
6) Fuel
Scooby: You have to go to the garage every 5-6 days and Spend over £200 a month on fuel!
Golf: Feels strange only going to the garage every 2 weeks now? Never put petrol in yet
All in all both cars are excellent and we should'nt get annoyed with each other sl*gging their cars off to each other. It's to everyone's own taste.
My freind with the Supra does'nt sl*g them off as he owned a Scoob previously.
Cheers

No need to gloat. David was asking if i need a slap, because my Scoob has
<----------this much power and looks for a MY00 UK Wagon.
May buy brother in laws 25 2.0 diesel when that goes back, should be cheap, economical and DIFFERENT to the scoob

Evo reckons:
"The hike from the previous model's 130bhp to 150bhp, and from 228 to 235lb ft is down to three main factors – a bigger boost from the variable-vane turbo, a more efficient intercooler and a better design of injector nozzle which results in a more efficient mixture burn."

get the 150 tdi sport fr leon, its comes with a full cupra R looking body kit and 17s, handles better than a golf and looks better too, and will be cheaper. Only available as an import at moment, can get them in 4x4 too, not bad if u do alotta mileage.

Even the new 180ps petrol turbos cant stay with a pd150 when rolling - trust me - you can out drag some fairly well known machinery in them. You really cannot beat them for overtaking on the motorway. What good is adding an extra 30bhp if it doesn't have a big wallop of torque to go with it. I think the 180bhp engine only makes the same in torque - the 150's standard are 230lb/ft as standard. I think the diesel lump up front actually helps the front end grip better than the std petrol GTIs too.
This morning new WRX driver on the M1 proceeded to drive up my *** completely removing any braking zone from his point of view (and more importantly my towbar would make quite a mess of the front of his car too - its for towing the westi - not a caravan before you jump to conclusions LOL). I then - without changing out of 6th from about 75mph started pulling away...hahahaha
49mpg vs 25-29mpg - its a tough choice
Ian
[don't give me any bollox about twisties too - the new WRX is an underpowered heavy lump with only 215ps - the STIs - however - are a bit better ]

I believe it's about 192 bhp from Revo (nee APR). Torque has to be limited 'cos the 6 speed box is rated for 350Nm (258 lb/ft) I believe, so even 300lb/ft is way over for it already. I think 313lb/ft rings a bell. Try www.revotechnik.com to see what they say; IMHO they're the best VAG diesel chippers out there by a long way.

Sorry to hijack here, but what's the boot space like on these ?
In terms of pram and accessories haulage space ?
I've got a 1996 Golf GTI and the pram I chose just fit and no more.
You can pile stuff on top if needed, but it came as a bit of a shock tbh.
I really don't want to go down the Renault Scenic-type route if I have to.

Mr Refugee, if you are worried about boot size, look at the Octavia. Before we get cries of "bias" here, yes I do own one. The boot on the Octavia is rather large, opened mine this morning and found 4 families of illegal immigrants in it! The Octavia is on an extended Golf platform and would shame many a true estate with its boot size. Mine can fit 2 of those 3 wheeled buggies, a pushchair and all the assorted cr@p which the little ones require. I know its a Skoda, but it is less nickable than the Golf, cheaper to run, cheaper to insure and is cheaper to buy, yet comes with more kit.
Back to chipping, I know someone with a Fabia TDI, had a tuning box on it, swapped that for a chip, then wondered what would happen if he put the tuning box back on to the chipped car - the answer is its bl00dy fast! Idea came from www.tdiclub.com
