300ZX Twin Turbo or RX7 Turbo?
#1
Hi,
I am thinking of getting a bit of a 'toy' and current thoughts are a 300ZX Twin Turbo or an RX7. Has anyone had either of these cars, experience, opinions etc etc would be great
(my only experience with a 300ZX was being battered to death by it on the M25 when I had my RB5 WR )
ta,
Matt.

RX7 every time looks million times better and is infinitly tunable, they are not that delicate either, providing its been looked after. Replacing the tips isn't the major job people make it out to be either. Nissan isn't really a sports car more of a carriageway cruiser.

Matt, two places to find out information.
Go to the Mazda Rotary Club website, then click on the forums.
And there is a Yahoo group called FDUK Buyers.
Both will be a good source of information about the RX7.

Gotta say 300zx.
Cheaper to buy, more tunable than the RX-7, cheaper to fix (though not much goes wrong with them), get a UK one and it's cheaper to insure, more places know how to fix them (not many mechanics know rotary engines), bigger uk following for the Z (BBSs and the like).
Only down side is the looks (well i like them anyway), but compared to the RX-7 the 300 is downright ugly.
check 300zx uk bbs for info.

RX-7, look tons better than the 300ZX, which look very dated now.
Also, nicer interior, and the engines really arent that fragile if you buy one carefully.
Budget in £2500 for an engine rebuild between 60 - 70k miles, and you'll have what should be a relaible car for another 60 - 70k miles.
Also quicker out the box than a 300ZX, and quite tuneable.
Best place to buy from in my research is www.neweraimports.com , thats where ive sourced mine through, and they get the thumbs up from every owner thats bought one from them. (you can check mine out here http://www.neweraimports.com/example.htm on their stock sold page, near the bottom, 1993 Montego Blue Type-R cant wait for it!! onoly a few weeks to go)

Matt, IMHO it depends what you want from the car, if you want amazing straight line acceleration in a big luxury cruiser then go for the 300ZX. If you are willing to put the effort in and want a nice handling sports car go for the RX7 (I did) but be sure and budget for an engine rebuild unless you are buying a low mileage or recently rebuilt model. You never know how the previous owner has treated the car, as the 150 miles I saw from my car before rebuild time shows.

Well you're not supposed to drive them Rob, they're supposed to be for posing!!
Yeah, the budget for a rebuild is really important, its an eye opener all right, but if you can get a budget together that includes that, and choose carefully, should be okay.

RX7 is very nice and would say this!
However, you just want one as a toy. So you want to buy something cheap and **** about with the tuning. So go for the 300 as you can pick up one of these nice and cheap

BTW What did Miguel tell you about the car? Did he offer any extra info not mentioned on the site? Just wondering

Thanks for the comments guys, useful stuff.
I am inclined to go for a 300ZX to be honest, I would love an RX7 but I can't stretch to the amount that I feel I would need to spend on one. Still not 100% sure yet so watch this space...

Hey Andrew, Miguel has been really good with questions and info, he's got a wicked RX7, and his mod path was very similar to the ones this ones had done, so he has loads of info on it.
Good to hear you'll be going for one mate, guess a few ex Honda folk are going turbo then!!
There's a good forum for RX7 prospective buyers if you get a chance to have a look http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/fdukbuyers/ , and ill let you know how I find newera once Ive gone through the car collection etc.
