Question

Interested to find out experiences on tuning boxes on various diesels, what benefits you're getting, any mpg gains / losses, any downsides (excessive smoke, rough running etc).

thanks, Craig

ive got a van/aken box in mine and it is a lot better, same mpg, power comes in lower down the rev range and pulls better all the way threw, no more black smoke than b4, also a lot better 4 towing with. plus when u come 2 sell the car u can sell the box or keep it 4 ur next car if it is compatitable.

its in a vauxhall 2.2 dti 16v frontera (new style)

Does it improve the throttle response any? I find the pedal feels very "rubber" on the 2.2DTi, needs quite a press to get any response. Since it's drive-by-wire this is probably a software issue rather than a physical design issue so could theoretically be solved by a tuning module or remap.

Guy at my work has VW Golf PDi 150bhp.

Got a box for about £500 and it was rollered at Star Performance at 185bhp and 293lbs or torque.

And believe me it can shift, once on the move I think it could probably embarass my UK300 (non PPP) straight line.

Oh, and he still averages about 48-49 mpg with no downsides as yet.

Well impressed.

Yep - I've got a PD150 that isn't chipped. I stayed 1/2 a car length on a new WRX from 80-120mph in a safe environment which is impressive. I don't condone to that sort of thing but it proves a point.

I have one on a 2002 Audi A4 Quattro Sport. Its a pd130 and with a bromley unit which has also been laptop tuned I reckon its around 160/170 bhp now.

Bug difference in MPG (if you drive economically), or in power and torque. For a big car it goes like hell now, and as already said will outpull most Hot hatches with ease.

Well worth the £450 spent, and can be removed in 2 minutes! Even bigger results in a 2WD Golf I reckon!

Thumbs up

SManning -- I will soon be getting my new company wheels, a Passat PD130. Just out of interest, what MPG are you getting from your Quattro? I'd be interested to get your average figure.

Also, was the Bromley unit £450 fitted, laptop tuned and including VAT? How many miles had you done before fitting it? Bromley's is only 30 minutes away from where I live.

thanks for any help

Talking

I bought a Golf GT TDI 110 during December and am over the moon with the mid-range performance.

You can get a tunning box to take it up to about 140 BHP may do that in the future though. Saving hard now for a house. That extra £200 a month I'm saving from driving a Scoob comes in handy.

Cheers

Brickboy,

Miles per Gallon, well its a bit of a job to say, but I only take the car out for long runs as get a lift to work, but on a run at around 90mph all the way I get about 43 to the gallon. Have been driving a bit harder on runs lately (nighttime) and at over 3 figures it is down to about 30.

I did manage 55 to the gallon once when driving along at 60 though....

As for the Bromley unit, I cant quite remember how much I paid, but although I thought it a lot at the time, it was worth it. I think it was around £300 - 350. Laptop tuning is extra though.

Either way with a passat not being 4WD you should get more MPG
