Winter tyres...............
My parents BMW was exactly the same E46 323Ci auto, with 225/50-17 tyres. Sports tyres most people insist on using all year round are only designed to be used safely in the summer. Therefore if you insist on using them in the snow and ice you pay the price I'm afraid, no grip and no fun.

Its not the car, its the tyres.
I'll get my flame suit on now, but if you insist on driving with the incorrect tyres on your car for the prevailing condition and choose blame the car you are deluding yourself.
Almost everyone now fits lovely grippy low profile sports tyres, which are designed to perform best in dry conditions and to give moderate capabilties in wet weather. Such tyres are wholly unsuitable for snow and ice, and as such are next to useless in such conditions.
Don't go looking for problems in the cars basic design when you are not using the correct tyres. How do you think all the people living in the Alps are able to get around OK with exactly the same cars, they change their tyres for winter is the answer..............

BB,
I have the same sort of thing happen to me if I apply too much right foot.Tend to have to keep it below 3500 rpm. This way, it is possible to drive a very powerful rwd car in the snow/ice/damp without having it fishtailing all over the place.
Just back off the throttle a bit, brake gently in plenty of time and change down earlier. So far, I've not bounced off the scenery, even on untreated roads.
Matt (with 400bhp of M5 under my right foot)

It could be worse, you could have an M3 like the chap this morning in sarf London. He was pissed off at me driving straight up a hill that he was struggling to get up (gave me the w4nker sign as I went past even though he was stopped, stuck on the kerb due to the road camber after about 5 attempts to get up ) that he came down the other side too quickly (circa 20mph) when he finally got over the brow, locked everything , slid across the junction and into the wall of the carpark that I had parked in. Thankfully there was no-one at the junction and I was parked on the other side of the carpark wall. He wasn't hurt fortunately, but the front of the car was a bit of a state. Interestingly, the airbags didn't go off but I guess that was because he hit the wall with a glancing blow or too slow.
Needless to say he didn't get much sympathy from me after his w4nker sign

Forgot to say, bravery award of the day went to the bloke in the TVR cerbera that I saw this morning very sideways at walking pace on a flat bit of road. If he manages to keep it out of the scenery today or it doesn't just break down on him due to snow/damp/it being Wednesday, then he will deserve a medal.

Skiddus Markus (no pun intended,
Actually, you wouldn't have been pissed off, this was a 4 lane road and he had slid back and stopped into what was effectively a parking bay ie parallel to the curb, with his mate out of the car. At no time did I go within 20 feet of him as I went past on the other side of the road. They were not going anywhere and had got themselves into that position by doing the desperado and revving the engine enough to look cool .As for patience, there were around 20 cars and vans behind me who had to sit there on the hill for 10 minutes while this clown messed about . I only went when he was out of the way and going nowhere as I didn't want my car nerfed.
He must have reversed down the hill and had another run at it after all the other vans/cars and me had gone through, as I was out of my car, carpark ticket bought from the machine the other side of the park and car locked up before he made his appearance.
Any more conclusions you like to jump to?

Rally cars have narrow knobbly tyres for snow, would look cool on a BM, not
better than crashing, bet even an X5 is useless in snow with the massive tyres they wear

Get some new tyres, RWD is better in snow than FWD, and all car stop about the same ****. bmw 50/50 weight probably better for stopping than most and you can use gear and brakes to better affect. And you can steer and put power down too..

I have an E36 M3 and must say it is a nightmere in the snow and ice...but I have to say this is mainly down to the wide, low profile tyres and 300+ BHP through the rear wheels.
Drive to the conditions....I have found changing gear at 2,000 rpm and pretty much missing out first is the only way to go. In regards to hill's etc.
Errrmmm forget it...

Righto guys, left the car at home and walked to the station today!!
much better on the nervous system, i can tell you.
cant believe that there were still people trekking along at 80+mph down the a127 last night!!!!!
i was doing 45 and still couldnt keep a straight line.
is it just me or does everyone have to drive at 90 to maintain concentration and straight line driving???
