My mate used to have one of these...

Pretty quick, but nothing amazing and felt slower than it actually was, due to the size, weight and smooth power delivery.

Cavalier Turbo 4x4:

Engine - 1998cc 4cyl 16v turbo/intercooler
Transmission - 6 speed man 4wd
Power - 201bhp @ 5600rpm
Torque - 206lb/ft @ 2400rpm
0-60 - 6.4secs
0-100 - 18.2secs
1/4 Mile - 15.4secs
Speed - 149mph

Was a good fast cruiser, with amazing mpg on a run, but handling was not the best.

The 4wd system is fragile too and the transfer box has a habit of going on them.

I had a Calibra Turbo, very similar to the Cav's, and the transfer box went.....twice. The turbo was also sh@gged. Got rid after not many months of ownership.

Then got an Evo and the performance is worlds apart.

The 4wd ain't that bad - as long as its had its pressure accumulator changed. Which most haven't.

Suprisingly similar system to the scoobs.

Tip:

Set of Courtenay Cams, Mongoose Exhaust and a K&N lets em breathe properly and transforms the car.

Had one for 18 months before getting my current car.

I'll agree with everything here - Deceptively quick and very able cars. Transfer boxes are reported "weak points" but thats to do with the owners not always following the maintenance instructions.

Had no problems with the transfer box in 18 months and know various ppl that have no problems with theirs including 120,000 and 200,000 mile examples.

Dont be put off by scare stories, particularly from ppl that have no idea but go on rumour......

Problem in the old days was lack of tuning. Nowadays, 315BHP is easily obtainable from £1000 giving 1/4 miles of 13.1 seconds (Santa Pod times)

375BHP is available but a bit more cash

Courtenay Cams = Cams from the NA 16v XE car. K&N panel filter yes but not induction kit.

Richie: 315bhp etc etc we wont start that one again eh ?

i used to have a cav turbo before my impreza very much uderated car 4x4 is great they have leather and once modded mine done 0-60 in aprox 5.5secs which is quite good for the car but they need loads of cooling to stop the engine blowing as they generate to much heat under the bonnet and the intercooler is tiny

Oooh, great thread!

Yeah, agree with above. Great cars but neglect and not knowing how to maintain them leads to turbo and transfer box failures.

I had one for 9 months before my Impreza and imo the cars are totally incomparable as far as driving them goes.

I'd have another though, put it that way.

For more info check here - www.cavalierturbo.com and check the links page.

Talking

I owned a cav Turbo for 2 and a half years, bought it with 70K, a knackered clutch and pourous head, from some W*nker at a garage in Kircaldy, so once I paid to have that fixed I had no option but to hold onto it, battled it out with the garage owner and got £800 towards repairs, great car apart from that, never had a problem with the transfer box, did 20K in it, keep all the tred depths even. Its deceiving how Quick they are, compared to how they feel but look at the speedo and you will know what I mean.
