Question

Obviously I knew I would be bored with my car!!

I don't want an expensive car sat on my drive, for just weekend and evening use, so my not modify what I already have???

So would it be stupid to:

strip out my car (lightweight!)
change the engine (1.8 8v to 2.1 8v)
rebuild gearbox
upgrade brakes
fit NOS!

The engine should be good for about 160-170bhp and then say a 25 or 50bhp jet for the NOS, to aid top end when the 8v start to run out of puff.

Should only cost £4-4.5k to do the changes (or about £3.5 without NOS!)

Or should I just sell it and buy something like a GTI-R?

I've given up on the idea of spending £10k on a car, probably modify it anyway and then still only use it every now and again!!

er for that money you can do way more than that...

fit a 16v engine - 139bhp outa the box, more like 170 with flowed head and filter / exhaust etc and have 2+k change for other mods...

fit 16v Turo technics engine (if you can find one) and upgrade ECU etc... or have someone like Stealth Racing www.stealth-racing.co.uk build you one for that money.

Fit an Audi TT 225bhp engine and gbox complete... or a VR6 etc or any other 1.8T etc... or find a G60 etc... lots of options...

brake upgrade is cheap using early VR6 caliper carriers (50quid from breakers) and 256mm calipers fro same car or late Mk2 16v... the buy 280mm disks and Pagid FR pads... sub 200quid mod.

ARBs - fit Eibach kit, 200 quid

Suspension - Eibach springs and koni Top Adj shox - 450quid.

have a gander on ClubGti (http://www.clubgti.com) forum and see what people are doing... i'm going the turbo technics /Stealth route... 220bhp here i come, torque steer... er wassat?

Are Stealth still making the turbo kit? Seems that since Turbo Dynamics stopped making the kit, they were looking at alternatives. Maybe I should just call them.

Have a look at TSR

2.1l engine £2165; Chip upgrade for the Digifant ECU £200 (retaining exsisting ECU) & £400 fitting. £2665 all in!

2.1l 8V fuel injected complete engine (1.8l exchange) - Silverstone
This is the 'BIG ONE' the ultimate 4 cylinder package. 2.1 ltr of fully balanced race technology engine fitted with our super special Pack 'C' head and TSR 103 or 203 cam. With massive mid-range torque and 170bhp this engine gives standard 3rd gear responses in 4th gear.! The 8 valve enthusiasts dream.
Due to a crunchy 2nd gear, either a special 'box with a 6th gear or a recon 'box (about £200)

About £3100 for the engine (fitted), recon gearbox (fitted) TSR manifold (£225 - Supplied) with the existing Magnex exhaust.

Raceland suspension (£225 fitted), Eibach front and rear strut braces (approx £200)

New rear calipers, disks, pads & braided hoses all round (£200) and uprated front items (already fitted)

Looking closer to £4000 with a set of decent 16" wheels (£300-500) as well!

Then NOS is £1200 from Power Engineering, so closer to £5k than my inital thoughts of £4k!!

Anyone who has modified a car before, knows that!

I was asked why I don't just buy a different car, my reply was "where's the fun in that?"

All this talk of modifying and I may know someone selling a reasonable modified GTIR for about £5k and the only thing it's missing is a FMIC!!

Andy, thinking about it youre right... Vince at Stealth doesnt really wanna do any more 16v turbos (its hard getting the bits now) but he can offer lots of other things and their work is top notch. I used to be a fan of TSR but have been converted to Stealth now, not cheap but high quality and nice people. Have a chat with him.
There are still 16v and 8v TT engine out there but be sure you buy a complete setup if you go that way, the parts are hellishly expensive but last forever...

Dont forget if you fit TSR's manifold (or anyones) you will need a vibratech front mount (130 quid) and then renew the other 2 rears as well or the manifold will crack...

Dont go raceland... cheapo and not very good quality by all accounts, go eibach / koni its tried and tested...

Thinking about it will the highly tuned TSR engine take NOS? i wonder if the compression will be too high on the already tuned engine??? hmmmmm, best to ask em if you go that route...

You can buy original nos kits for £600 and theres a bloke(wizard of nos)up north doing hes kit for the same sort of money.

Try v8/american car specialists for nos kits..I was going to get nos on my mk2 16v but i changed my mind cos of gas price and how long it lasts,so i spoke to Vince at stealth and a few ££££££££ later i had a turbo kit,good for 240bhp/250lbt and amazingly tractable

To be honest, I think the condition of the car is too good (low mileage H-reg big bumper) to start f***ing about with it!

Best off selling it and either getting a £500 shed or a £5000 GTIR!

OK *IF* I wanted a turbo engine in a mk2 Golf 8v GTI, what would I realistically be spending if the car were completely standard??

Taking into consideration, the engine (inc exhaust, filter, chip, etc), gearbox & clutch (to cope with double the power), brakes (to stop double the power), suspension (to cope with power and probably the additional weight up front!) and labour to fit it all!

Not sure if I missed anything!

Doesn't matter if it's missing a FMIC, just put a Saab FMIC in there. A lot of the Nissan boys do that and apparently it's a quality intercooler.

All that talk in the santa pod meet in general about 1.2bar and high 11's has got me thinking bout selling the scoob, getting me gti-r out the garage, getting a front mount and 1.2bar, stripping it out...

They're great value as well Mine runs 1bar, ap clutch, scorpion decat etc and it's quicker than me scoob, had it two years and love it.

Andy tang,i reckon you could do it for 'parts only' around 4 grand and fitting everything could be another couple of grand or might be less.

Andy, have you spoken to TSL Racing in Bridgewater, Somerset?

As long as you catch them at a good time, they're always willing to discuss conversions and so on. I *very* nearly went for their supercharger convrsion in my Mk2 16v, but ended up selling that for a five door Mk3 instead. Their demonstrator was awesome though - sooo much torque it was funny. Although it was only in the developmental stage back then.

Definitely worth giving them a call though.

Depends on what turbo engine...

full 1.8T from breakers is 1500quid... youve a late fuse box so the electrics will be easier but still lots of work... nedd clocks, box, gearchange and ignition keys etc...

full 1.816v TT with all bits is same money... clutch is 350, turbo rebuild 4/500 then new engine mounts 250 and fitting is straight swap (same box and mountings etc) new ignition modules and setup required.

you can build a 1.816vTT from scratch. rebuild engine with offset wrist pins (?k) then add ex manifold is 400ish, turbo will be 750ish, exhaust 400 with DP, IC will be 4/500, pipes and bracketc will be needed and then ignition module and setup etc. slower to do but all new parts...

Agree really, 4k should easily do the job. I also reckon add 1-1.5k for labour if you dont do it yourself... then you have a subtle car that will rock.

Sell it & buy a G60, leccy Recaro`s, 8 valves , 280mm brakes etc. Chip & pully = 200bhp you sit on the wrong side though but you knew that anyway

I will have a 1.8T with geabox for sale in a about 4-8 weeks if your interested

upgraded to a kkk04 turbo - current power approx 235 bhp with 250 lbs torque

will be looking for around £2000 for everthing including twin or single front mounted intercooler/s

The gearbox has a nearly new uprated fast road sachs clutch and flywheel....

That G60 looks nice Andy, thats the problem though, do you convert a lhd G60 to rhd or put a G60 engine & other oily bits into yours? £££££££££££££

Well AMD have done all the work on my car.....they will be the guys taking it out.

I know they've put a 1.8T in a corrado so i presume that would be more or less the same as a mk2 - maybe they will do a deal if they can put it straight into another car when they take it out of mine
