Clio Cup
#1
Hi guys im thinking of buying a Clio Cup in the new year, was thinking of getting a Scooby (classic) but these little cars have got me thinking
I am by no means a racing driver so I just want to know how the cup will fare in the world with my modest driving skill.
Will the running costs will be far cheaper than the cars that it will be easily be able to keep up with.
Will I get used to the speed, I even did that on my MR2 Turbo but I want a car that will flatter my skill and make me arive at my destination happy.
Is the clio cup for me?
Any other information about the cup will be welcomed, your thoughts please......

Scoob and cup two completely different cars.
The Scoob will flatter your driving more than the Clio. If you have the money to run a Scoob, there ain't no comparison for me. The Scoob is a fantastic all rounder.
The Clio will provide probably more fun throught the twisties, being smaller an all that, and ultimately would not be far behind a Scoob for overall pace.

for clio info m8 get yourself over to
www.cliosport.net
my other ½ just bought a standard 172.
now i only drove it once for 30-40 mins and its quick but it certainly aint no scooby.
depends wot u want / how much to spend / insurance etc
also the cup is missing lots of the nice toys of the standard 172 so make sure u deffo want a cup.
not sure u can really compare clio cup and scoob though cos they are aimed imho at different markets........
if u want the grin factor i'd have to say scoob although i am a bit biased after owning a scoob for 2 yrs (gone now though cos of company car )

how deep is your wallet? if moneys no problem then Id be into the scooby, but if you do thousands of miles a year, then the clio may be a better bet with longer service intervals, better mpg etc etc

If you're not going to track it, or drive it hard, then I wouldn't bother with the Cup, a 172 would be a better bet. You'd be looking at 32-34 MPG in everyday driving, around 40 odd when on a long run!
I think it depends on what you really want, they're two completely different cars!

I've got one and a scoob.
I agree they are 2 v different cars. Cup is much more raw than scoob with super direct steering and go kart like handling. Its alot cheaper to buy and run than scoob I get 36.5 ave MPG out of mine since I've owned it (its got a fuel computer) dont think I ever managed more than 25 in my scoobs.
I would drive the Cup and 172 and decide yourself. Cup has fewer toys of 172 less leather, air con, xenons, abs its also noisier as it doesnt have much sound deadening. However 172 rolls more and the steering isnt as direct or well weighted its also feels slightly slower in all gears due to extra weight.
Against the scoob I would say the Cup is a better everday car its got more equipment than scoob is nippier cos it doenst have any off turbo moments its also v light and chuckable.
In the real world it feels as quick as a std bug eye in a straight line but feels faster on motorways etc as it doesnt have the WRX' s taller gearing.
Flat out driving a bug eye or classic scoob would be quicker on rough b roads and easier to drive. Although on smoother roads there would be less in it.
The Clio gets a bit ragged with torque steer and movement under heavy braking when pushed to its limits on rough B roads.
Overall both are excellent but v different. Clio is fun in light and chuckable hot hatch sort of way and cheap to run. Scoob is ultimately quicker and more special.

This is what I did...
Find yourself a connection with a Renault dealer employee. Get them to buy it as one of their 'Family' cars (up to 5 a year). It will be registered in your name ... and the advantage is a discount of more than 20% You must promise not to sell within 6 months
..and if you're even luckier, order on Dec 1st 2002 for delivery on Jan 4th 2003 - then get a phone call from the dealer on Dec 10th saying if you take it before Dec 20th 2002, you can have *another* 10% off. Result - one v.v.cheap Clio Cup sat in my garage with 228 miles on the clock

okay doke,
I've had my Cup for just over 2 weeks now, and I've done nearly 1100 miles in it. Very impressed so far - a couple of minor niggles but the performance and handling easily help me forget about these It's got some serious wellie - which you'd expect in a car weighing around 1000kg and pushing out 170 odd bhp
Cheaper - definitely. The whole petrol/insurance/servicing thing is very reasonable for the performance available. I believe Evo tested the Cup against a standard WRX in issue 48, and the times were so close as to be identical. Cup faster in some areas, Scooby quicker to 60 by a fraction of a second.
I'd agree with the comments above - find yourself a dealer with one and take it for a drive. I don't find it too 'raw' and I use it every day. The best part is that the vast majority of people don't know what it is, hence will leave you alone - I'm also not overly worried about leaving it somewhere, unlike the Scooby.

Chris...and as a reply to your email...
Philips Silver Vision bulbs in the front and clear side repeaters make it look a bit different and I've sacrificed some of the weight advantages over a standard 172 by putting in some carpets. RH side of the car beads water fantastically - only had time to WW that half so far! Can't decide what the front wings are made out of - think they're just plastic!
Currently just finishing the last month of the P1 insurance with it (small refund due), but have a quote for £402 fully comp for Mr and Mrs MartinM for the next year. Not too bad I suppose...
Have decided on Optimax for it (old Scoob habits die hard!), but don't really know if it's worth it. Any thoughts?
Ady - yep, enjoying the few miles that it's done so far. Has the P1 done many more? Did you get the Tracker certificate OK? I sent back the form they sent me.
Richard - Now got 238 miles on the clock No point rushing it is there Again, old Scoob habits die hard!
Happy New Year to everyone
Martin

Martin,
I don't know if your car has it, but on my 172 it has a sticker on the inside of the filler cap stating that 98 RON is recommended. I think it should say that in your manual as well.

I really cant wait to have a test drive in one of these cars.
My local Renault dealer in Hull does not have one in so I cant have a look or a test drive.
The sales person said they sell them within 24hrs of getting one in.
They bsaid they would call me when they got one in but they have not got back to me yet.
I think they will supprize a few cars out there

These cups has got me thinking.
How much do they cost to fill up ? and how many miles do you get from a full tank, around town and on the motorway ?
Service every 10k or 12k ?
Cheers

Going by that then Scott, it would be possible to do well over 300 miles to the tank. I can well beleive that, I got 39 MPG on a 2 hour trip to Aberdeen at the weekend!

These cars really interest me performance / price wise they can't be beat. I currently have a 306 Rallye, anyone out there driven both?? Is it worth changing to a Clio Cup or will it be too similar to bother??

Saw the car and drove it.
Loved it to bits I could not believe the throttle response!!
But I dont theink the dealer is playing ball, Its already registerd in their name so I will be the 2nd owner, its also there dispaly model, even though I was the first to test drive it, no doubt it will have more miles on it if I want to buy it. They are knocking it down to 11995 from 12995 is this ok?
What do you guys think?
