Question

Hi All,

Sorry if this has been done before, but I have to chop the Scoob in at the end of Jan(costing too much to run - doing 2000 miles a month or so) and have decided I want something "sporty" but relatively cheapish to run ie no old Porsches or things like that.

In the past Ive had a 306 GTI6, and Integra Type R too - so these are out just because I want a change!

My budget is 7k ish(half the value of the scoob!) so what would you get?? Im currently thinking Puma but open to all ideas!

cheers

Andy

How about an MX-5 1.8- pretty slow I'm afraid but reasonable turn of speed (not after a scooby!) and great handling- don't know if you need 4 seats but they fit the bill of cheap to run and are ultra reliable. Build quality is ahead of the Puma to. After all the MX-5 is a much purer design than the Fiesta in drag that is the Puma

Or what about spending 4K and getting a timewarp MR2 Mk1 again cheap to run and great fun. The only thing I hate about all the cars mentioned is they are a little "hairdresser" for my liking.

Hmmm, you've had a 306 and an ITR. Go for the Puma a sweet driving car.

Also:

Nissan S14 200SX
Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo
Clio Williams
Clio 172
Peug 306 Rallye
MR2 Turbo (import)
Golf Mk2 GTi 16v
Corrado VR6

My choice? I already have a modified GtiR, a 306 Gti-6, and a cheap AX GTi..........I would buy a cheap runna around like the AX to do the mileage and then you can still keep your Scoob.

I think you'd be disapointed by a Puma after an Integra, not because they're bad, but because the Teg is better.

Its very difficult at that price to recommend anything above an Integra, especially as you want cheapish running costs, so GT4, Sunny etc ruled out.

Fiat coupe' may be good, not sure how expensive they are to run, or possible one of the original Civic Type-R's?

Thumbs up

As a Puma owner, I can honestly say that they're excellent little cars. Perhaps not as fast as some in a straight line, but they have excellent handling and are really fun to play with.

Failing the Puma, I'd go looking for a Clio 172. They're at least as much fun (if a bit flimsier), although you might have difficulty getting a decent one for around 7k. At least Pumas are cheaper.

Have fun,

Mal.

Cool

Gotta be the MR2 tubby.... what else does 0-60 in 5.3 for less than that?? 245 BHP stock, and upgradable to 300+ with ease! Plus you get the sideways giggles, the super dry-weather handling, (although a little scary/more fun in the wet). Good boot space considering... can get 2 golfbags in the **** of mine, and a couple of bits under the front boot. Bulletproof engine, and summit that will blow away most cossies!

Given your situation, i would be choosing between the 172 and the VR6.

172 would be cool if I could find one for 7k, finding a Puma for 7k should be easy ish.

Almost had to call my dad a **** a minute ago, he thinks he knows it all and said a puma was a rubbish car, ford got it all wrong etc etc ???????? er hello - read the Evo magazine and Autocar mag reviews, its a very well rated car. He has a 306 Tdi estate of all things!

You're right, the Puma is a well screwed together car, but is quite sluggish, even in 1.7 form. If you can't find a 172, then a VR6 it must be
