Question

Have had our Golf for nearly 3k miles from new, and am slightly disappointed by the fuel economy. I was expecting a good 45mpg average, but am only just making 40. Am I driving the b0llocks off it, or will it improve with time?

Mungo,

The economy I have is as follows:-

on an 80 mile motorway run at 80mph, I got 62mpg.
on a 400 mile run that took 10hrs due to loads of traffic, I got 54 mpg
on my 10 mile run into work, mixed roads, I get 45-50 mpg depending on the traffic
on a late night thrash home from work I get 36-40mpg

The cold weather causes the mpg to drop a bit I have noticed.

Borrowed my dads Bora TDi 130 to potter around in one day, he manages to get 45-60 mpg. The best I could get out of it is 40-50, the technique is to use the highest gear, with six for 70mph +.

This mileage also includes a burn away from some traffic lights against a rep in his mondeo, quite surprised by the standing take-off, so was he!

Just completed the first 9k in my Golf 130.

I've averaged about 53mpg and have seen upto 70mpg on a good run and never less than 45mpg when gunning it.

The cold weather does make a big difference as does the climate control. Once the windows are clear I switch the C/C to ECON mode and enjoy the better mpg.

Anyway, even 40mpg beats the 22mpg I was getting in the scoob.

Mmmm, I must be doing something wrong - I've not seen over 45mpg for a whole trip. Normally it's my 27 mile commute through a variety of roads between 20mph urban with lots of stop/start and acclerating from traffic lights, and 80mph motorway.
The only long motorway trip I did was on cruise control at 90ish (late at night), it was doing high 30's with a totally clear road. Maybe I'll try sticking to 80 to see how that fares.

Well, I get 45 - 50 on a run in my (chipped) PD130 Ibiza. Best I've had is 60 on a trip where traffic was flowing but only at about 50 mph, worst is high 30's in town or 90+ cruising. It looks to me like wind, slight incline or over about 75mph starts to have a big effect in the Beezer.

Interesting comment on the cold weather reducing mpg. I just fitted new wheels as it turned cold and I've been worried that they've hurt the economy, but maybe it's OK. I'll turn the climate off too and see if that helps, but the handbook says it disconnects the compressor if it's cold enough not to need it.

The (APR) chip slightly improved the mpg BTW, and they're doing 25% off all chips until Xmas Eve, if you're tempted.

Just picked up my '98 Golf GT TDi 110 last Friday and my overall average is 47.3mpg on the first tank of diesel.

On the way to work this morning I got 55.3mpg average on a 17 mile journey.

Also done 300 miles on just over half a tank Should last me until the end of next week

I never regret selling the Scooby as the depreciation did me no favours at all.

Cheers

Thumbs up

I did slightly better on the trip home last night - 49.7 but I was driving like a *****. Any starts from stationary (even pulling away very gradually) seem to kill the average.
Like it's been said above, even 40 beats the Scoob's 22!!!

I managed to see 29.7 on mine for a 19 mile rgging session tonight (and the climate was on Econ)!

It still did 42.1 for the whole 160 mile journey, and a fair bit was in Manchester centre.

Using the rights gears is the keyto great MPG in the TDi, first is purley for pulling away from standstill, as soon as you get rolling stick it straight into 2nd and beyond.

average about 40-45 mpg on my 150 brake

worst maybe 30, and that is givin it some stick, best about 50 mpg from work to home - approx 20 min run

best long distance 48 down to London (between 80-100mph) and 44 (100+) coming back

Zax,

The PD 130 engine in the Ibiza TDi Sport can be remapped. Roughly gives 180BHP and 300lb/ft torque.
