Opinion on Gti-r's

buts he talks enough there already
BTW gtir is ugly
goes as well as a sti's wrx etc
handling is not as good
basically not as good all rounder as a scoob out of the box but has potential you need to sort brakes, handling and usual breathing and boost mods the you will be able to upset sti's and wrx's.

chances are you'll come away from here even more confused, would reccomend you test drive all the cars your thinking about buying and see which one you like most then look over each cars owners club/forum for common problems, insurance etc
I own a gtir and like it alot its not the fastest car on the road but there will not be much on the road in the same price band that will beat it to a ton especially if the boost is at 1 bar etc scoobys generally handle better and sound the b*ll*x with large exhaust but are usually alittle more to buy then theres cossies etc which are also good vfm.
But for the money the gtir is hard to beat if alittle ugly but as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder

I was seriously looking to buy one recently (have slightly changed my mind and am lookingn at something else now) and I think that the GTIR Owners Club site will be a lot of help (guys on there are all willing to help and there's less crap thrown about on that site than there is here !)
Problems :
Clutch/gearbox : seems to be marginal with std power and once you upgrade (raise boost to 1.0 bar (std is 0.7) or even remove cat / upgrade filter some people experience clutch slip and it can result in crunchy gearchanges.
Of 4 cars I looked at 3 had rust on the rear arch where it meets the rear bumper : there is a lip inside the panel where dirt + water collects. Rust comes through from the inside and if visible on the paintwork then you'll need to cut out the rusty metal : PITA !
The ones I drove varied but a good one feels really quick : quicker than a std Impreza I'd think but handling is not as good but being a shorter / lighter car it'll be a bit more chuckable so it's good fun.
You can pick these up from around £4000 but most are from 1990/91 so they're starting to get on a little.
A standard one (ie still with the airbox + no sign of any boost gauges controllers etc) is a really quick little cheaply priced 4wd rally rep if you find a well cared for example but as with all performance cars if you buy a bad one you'll regret it !

Similar performance to WRX's-respond really well to exhaust, decat and aftermarket air filter which can cut an easy 1/2 second off the 0-60 dash and a second off the 1/4mile.
It's getting on a bit so swapping the suspension will do wonders for the handling and better brakes are a must. Most GTiR owners mod their cars to a greater degree than Scooby owners and 280+bhp at 1 bar is the norm with many 300bhp+cars for not much money spent.
Be prepeared to shell out for a new gearbox though if you raise the boost too much and give it plenty of abuse-cost..£lots.

... good performance vehicle, half the price of a WRX ... BUT, the deciding factor - very small driver area, esp in the head room department (no chance if u top 6 feet tall).

Good job im only 5'10" then ! If all goes to plan i should get it next week. I'm thinking of getting a Dawe's on it but the only people that seem to be using them is you lot, would it be any different on a Pulsar ?

I have one and at 6'2" I've never had a problem with headroom. The seat is very adjustable so you drop it down if needed.I also have an Escort runabout and this is far worse due to the sunroof-I have to tilt my head to the side slightly and it's uncomfortable on long journeys(starting to look like a vulture).
I've just bought a Dawes device from someone on here but it won't be fitted for a while.Check link below to read info on Dawes.
