The 323 is a de-tuned 2.5ltr Straight Six 24v, nice engine but not as pleaseing as the 2.5> engines. Iam pretty sure the 197bhp 2.5ltr was de-tuned to 175ish bhp for the 323, other changes to note include the only recent BMW 6pot that has carried a single exhuast, the big brothers got 2.

Nice car, mostly sold to sales reps and middle management, not very quick but fast enough, silky 6pot will glide through the top end no bother.

The 323 has a strange stigma attached to it that makes it a bargain, real BMW people are not overkeen on them but they are good all round cars, just the middle level 3 series.

Parts are not as bad people think on BMWs so no real concern there, servicing can be steep but the big ones are few and far between, low mileage cars always better. Anything between 60-90k miles will cost, clutch, brakes etc etc all go in this bracket. MPG wont be too bad on a 323, high 20's low 30's I would have thought, depends on the wieght of your right foot!

Car will do millions of miles if serviced on the nose, keep the BMW history up to help residual, leather and AC also help.

Tom.

I had a 98 328 E46 saloon, same car slightly larger engine, mine was a steptronic auto, cost £80 oil change normal service.
Gave 26.5 Mpg generally driving in and out of Manchester and on long trips to Scotland it would give 32mpg cruising at 90, it was amazingly economical at speed for such a large engine.
The car did need new front discs at 30000 miles which cost £500

I have the old brouchure for the 323 it quotes
Urban 22.2mpg
Extra Urban 40.9mpg
143 mph
8.0s 0-62mph
60-75mph 8.4s in 4th gear
170BHP 5500rpm
181 lbs torque 3500rpm
Service interval should be around 15000miles

They are great cars sporty but really smooth cruising.
