Porsche Anoraks required !

Saw a mint old style 911 (Air cooled) in bright orange on the way to work in Manchester, very low, big split rims, cage, race seats. The registration contained the word LAW in it, it was badged as, deep breath
911 Turbo RS Le Mans
It had the usual Turbo spolier with some other thing on the top, on poles, not sure if it was a cooler or another spolier, looked and sounded amazing
Anyone know any more about it ?

I am no anorak, but I am getting there
I did not think they made a RS that was turbo charged
The RS is a light weight car.
My guess is that it is a replica of something, sounds nice though.
Check out the porsche website they have loads of information about their proud history.

no 911 turbo RS le mans AFAIK.
can have:
RS
RSR
Turbo
TurboS
GT1
GT2
GT3
i think the bloke had been down to halfords once too often
either that or it was one of the tuners cars. e.g. Gemballa , they have some pretty funny names.

I agree with Merkin (in my official capacity as an anorak ). But who'd want to do all that Max P*w*r stuff to a 911? Maybe the guy is a weekend track racer?? There are quite a few such beasties around and about here in Bucks/Oxon, with wild liveries and humungus spoilery on their rumps.
There's an outfit called Zeemax who do outrageous bodykits for all 911's....but really...would you want to??

Sounds like a Gemballa they did a Le Mans. It held the record around the Ring for a while in 95 IIRC.
570 bhp mmmmmmmm
Did it look like this
Fully paid up Porsche anorak
Oh and Porsche did a 968 Turbo RS but no 911

Nah, didnt look like the yellow one, as for Max Powered, hmm I seem to be prone to the big wheels and exhaust tendencies myself and I think I am right that most of Scoobynet seems to as well, only they think cos its HKS, Blitz or similar that its less boy racerish !
Its just more expensive, and I expect that the Porsche I saw was an order of magnitude more expensive than any Scoob, I think it looked superb, it stood right, sounded right and was intruiging enough for me to post this thread, I do expect that its not a sad old 1978 911 Sportmatic with a fancy paintjob and some expensive wheels, I think Mark Champions theory that it is a work of one of the German tuners sounds about right and I would like to know the spec.
Come to think of it I must check the Porsche BBS to see if there is a Porshce driver trying to find the spec of the mint 88 Golf GTI he saw on the M56.....

Errrrrr.... (adopts trainspotter anorak and voice)...I think you'll find that's a 911 Turbo Lightweight (Lichtbau) special edition designed to look like the 1992 IMSA GT Championship winning cars...but I might be wrong
Gina G, boring for Britain entrant.

Quite possibly Gastro! ...didn't the decal read IMSA Superstar Champion??
Mark's original enquiry stated that the word LAW appeared in the no. plate. The most exotic 911 I was a passenger in belonged to a partner in a law firm. It was (and may still be if it hasn't been trashed) the world's only RHD black 993 bodied RSR. Porsche only made 7 RHD 993 RSR's for the road. It was the most aaaaaaawsome beast...pedestrians were visibly startled by the noise...even at 30 mph.
Why did I not try harder at skool?
Anorak now off and back to 911&PW for more swatting...

I am afraid Gina (my girlfriend) has been besotted by 911s for over 20 years. I think she has Nine-elevenitess. I thought she had been cured when she took over my MY99 Turbo Wagon, but it was just a 6 month remission. She craves a 911 again and nothing will stop her.
At least when Gina does buy another 911 I will get to drive it!

I am I right in thinking they only made 16 968 RS's
Nope.
They made 15 TurboS and 4 TurboRS 968's
Yes I am sad

Don't know how many 964 RSs were made, but there were (IIRC) 47 RHD 993 RSs - of which my pal used to own one. Beautiful. Also, (again IIRC) there has never been turbo'd RS, the Turbo-charged lightweights were TurboS or GT2s. GT1 was the GT-racer (limited run also made for the road) and the GT3 is a 996 only model that is in essence what the RSs were (NA, stripped out).

Gary - look here.......
http://www.968turbo.homestead.com/
There were 4 Turbo RS's - and awesome they look too !
The Turbo S was also an awesome looking car - I beleve that the Turbo engine was very similar to the 944 with a reworked head.

Indeed ! Thanks Dave..
Personally I think the older 911's are a nightmare to buy - especially privately.
A good independent specialist is the surest way. But generally go for the G50 gearbox, miles are relatively unimportant if there is a good history. Clutches often feel heavy when they are on the way out.
Turbo's will cost a small fortune to maintain, but the 3.2 Carrera's are generally the cheapest to run.
Look out for the usual accident damage, and keep to the original fuch alloys if possible.
The electrics/heating can be dodgy -but not expensive to fix (my car is going back to autofarm tommorrow ) - somehow I've blown the relay for the central locking but the fuse is in tact ?? god knows ! - anyone else with any bright ideas ?
Feel free to ask away if there is anything else I can add....
Remember once you've started one up you'll fall in love forever - the noise is just amazing
