Actually sound wise, I tend to agree - I told her she needs a big drainpipe exhaust on it!!!!! As for quicker - didn't think there was much in it - in gear though yours has the edge most likely...

Just drove in to work in my (company) car, a Golf V5, and the steering felt horrible!! (Un?)fortunately there's nothing actually wrong with it - it's just that I've spent three days driving my wife's Mx5 and the steering on that is lovely. It's well weighted, is direct, and has great 'feel'. Mine this morning felt like I was playing a (cr@ppY!) arcade game!

Bah! P!ss off Neil!
I really like my car (one can't really love a company car...), but I couldn't believe the difference in feel this morning!
Never mind....mine's quicker and sounds much better!!

Cor - its close
according to Evo:
V5:
170bhp @ 6200 & 166lb/ft @ 3200, 1200kg.
144bhp per tonne, 0-60 in 8.2, 139mph top whack
MX5 1.8iS:
146bhp @ 7000 & 124lb/ft @ 5000, 1100kg.
135bhp per tonne, 0-60 in 8.4, 129 top whack
not much in it really, though Jennies will need screaming to make it go unlike yours Can't believe theres only 100kg difference between the two, would have expected more!

Bloomin' heck! Only 100kg lighter? I'd have thought it'd be much more than that - the Golf isn't known now fpr being a lightweight. (Just listen to that solid clunk as doors shut, and weep, Scooby owners! )
As for the noise, it's not really the exhaust noise, it's the fact that my 5pot sounds good, but when the Mx5 is thrashed (not that I would do/have done hon!) it sounds...well...thrashy! It just sounds a bit painful!
Cheers for the stats tho - they are a bit of an eye-opener. And yes, it is the in gear roll ons where you really notice the difference.

As for weeping that my door doesn't clunk, I don't think so!!!!
Yeah - thats what I meant, your engine under load sounds ok, but the MX5 is like many other cars these days, thrashy, like the Civic Type R. Some people like it some don't........ personal taste really
A decent exhaust IMHO makes it sound less thrashy and more happy as you give it some welly
I was well suprised the MX was that heavy too, as you say, the golf is well known for being lardy and the MX is supposed to be a lightweight 2 seater!
The 1.8i is actually lighter at 1065kg, I guess the diff, electric aerial and the other bits on the S adds..... As a result the 1.8i actually has a power to weight of 140bhp per tonne but strangely is slower to 60 at 8.6. Weird!

And the kit works even better on 1.8s

I'll get me coat then
Thankfully my better half won't touch her car - that could get too exciting seeing as she insists on an R34 to commute in Luckily she doesn't drive manuals, so hers is an FR auto - still, with an RB25 turbo mill it is damn quick.
I'll warn the AVO guys not to answer any calls then
