Yeah both capable of 180 +/- with a chip/filter/exhaust type upgrade.
1.8T's can be sourced quite cheap (as they've been around for a while now), but the TDi 150's are bit harder, and a bit pricier to come by, though you can go for the 130 and aim a little lower.
I went for the V6, having decided to go down the petrol route, and test drove it alongside the 1.8T - hated the 1.8T - so opted for the V6's nice smooth grunty character and lovely exhaust note
Check out http://www.uk-mkivs.net/forum/ for more information from those taht have been there and got the t-shirt!

I paid 18K for my PD150 brand spanker with heated leather seats, winter pack, climate pack etc. I think places like motorpoint and broom-broom at the places to check for good prices.
Its makes it a quite expensive golf but they are great mile munchers. I will even consider a chip soon - but to be honest they are pretty capable out of the box.
regards
Ian.

The 150 came out this year and the 130 for 2000 I think.
I enjoyed my chipped Audi diesels but not in the same way as my 99MY Impreza. When the company doesn't contribute to the fuel, it won't worry me to go back to diesel though !

Are you sure you dopn't want to buy V6 AWE for you Golf !?
Absolute bargain that I don't need (ie Not the £2380 that the agency want for it)

Flat 4x4 : you've offered it to me before, but to be honest it's not worth it to me. I could have had V6 <my initials> for £400 form the DVLA, and decided against it.
thx tho

No probs Jon.
I'll wait for the R32 owners to come along or until my next car - in a way I hope the dealers don't sell it for the profit margins they expect - ie £2380 to return me £1200. Just extended the retention for £25. Are you thinking about a 32 by the way ? - nice car.

I like the idea of the R32 - but don't like the style - odd to say I know!
I think it'll be a next generation S3/S4 next, probably in the next 2 years.
I decided against the private plate, after seeing a few around, wasn't as nice as I first thought - so opted not to spend the money. You suggest that the agency are selling your plate for 2800 but you'll only get about half of that back ?? Is that right ?

Yup
Most of them work (or try to work) on 100% margins. So if I want to return say £800, they'll advertise at £1595. They sold V8 AWE for a similar sum to the £2380 mine is up at - but no cost to me so might as well leave it at with them. Nice work if you can get it !
