How about a Subaru Legacy B4. Im sure someone here could post a pic or 2. There may even be a Legacy STI coming soon.
They are newer models, but a slightly older Legacy GTB estate are commonly found with Autos. 2.0 twin turbo, 4wd 280bhp.
Nice cars.

Hello the time has come in my life where understated and fast and comfortable are what I desire from an automobile. My children are grown up and have left home so I have no need for a Volvo estate or other such cars of its ilk.
I hate changing gears and tend to commute in heavy traffic therefore an automatic or one of the toetronics boxes would be best. I don't wish to spend a ransom and see it vanish in depreciation. So a car that is not new but looks like it is fairly recent would be my choice. No BMW or Mercs I have been there and done that. What would you fellow performance guys suggest for someone such as myself who is more mature in his years but still would like to go zoom zoom from time to time.
Respectfully Rudolph

Went out for a test in the new Saab 9-3 Sport saloon the other day - very nice. 175 BHP and all the goodies for around £21K. I understand there's going to be an auto box option in the new year. Might be worth a look.

I'm going through a similar process at the moment.
If you are ruling out BMW or Merc you are probably ruling out the best two 'power with comfort'/'comfort with power' marques.
VW/Audi have gained a lot of ground and are almost a contender in that market, but you will have to go for brand new to get a competitve car - BUT if you have been down the BMW/Merc route, they (and most things) will seem inferior in that genre. Also, avoid the multitronic (CVT) option as they are phenominally unreliable and expensive.
Aside from that, the newer Jags are OK (280bhp 4.0 V8 sport S-type can be had quite cheaply at 1-2 yrs old)
Failing that you are left with the Volvo/Saab types, which for my money are even further down the pecking order

Is the Legacy all that our Japanese friends have, to offer to the game? As I was rather hoping for less doors. There again, I do like the sound of the Audi, but I am not sure that a dressed up VW is quite the image that I desire.
You have all given me inspiration and for that I thank you, your suggestions, they are most appreciated.
Unless anyone else wishes to step forward with a suitable suggestion, I shall retire for the night and contemplate the various cars put before me.

abcdefgeouayetpahdgadhgdakjg,
How about the Mitsubishi Galant VR4. Nice agressive looks, big and comfy, and loads of power. (or if you're lucky you could track down a Nissan Stagea, skyline powered with a sensible body).

Nissan Skyline
Toyota Supra Twin Turbo
Mazda RX-7
Lexus Soarer
Mitsubishi VR4
Mitsubishi GTO
Not sure how comfortable the above cars are, but it is a few more to choose from, as I had previously thought you were looking for a 4 door.

Stevie,
I forgot about the soarer... 2 door, fast and very luxurious (especially the one with the TVs in the headrests ). Getting a bit old these days though. Probably have a hard time tracking down a prinstine low miler.

What about a Honda Accord Type R?
Can be had for about the £8k mark, 200bhp with all the toys. Maybe not the semi-lux image of BMW/Merc/Audi etc. but a quality motor with very good reliability, bit of a Q car too.
Or maybe a Lexus GS300? Ranging from £5k to £10k these come FULLY loaded, very reliable etc...?

I had a 4.0 V8 Soarer and it was great.
Really need to watch the speedo though as it's too easy to go fast in them.
In standard form it would crack 100 in around 15.5 seconds. It was great round the corners too. Some models have active suspension which is really neat and 4WS to boot. Suprisingly 25mpg on average.
I was offered a 1993 V8 with 63000kms the other day, mint condition, so they are about still.
