Cool

hi chaps,

It has the bosch pump so all should be fine,i put 5% thinners in at first and then went to neat new rapeseed oil and it ran fine on both so i'm gonna lower the vis for winter with the thinners and add a pug water heated fuel filter and make a heatexchanger up as well to keep it thin, will make a system up to start on diesel then switch to oil or prehat the oil with a glow plug.

I have found a source for used oil for free so will clean this and run it for hardly any cost.

Not just a fine for using illegal fuel - you could lose the car - Uno diesel ! I suppose it could be worth the risk -thats why i bought the uno £400 for a 70k one owner minter, cant go wrong, when i get the car all sorted i will pay the tax as it will still be cheap.

This is great fun and what a change from filling the scoob and watching all that dough disapear.

Keep you posted and try and get some pics.

Paul

Cool

Not the scoob, but my uno diesel, tested it yesterday and made an under bonnet fuel tank up consisting of a lucozade bottle and off i went did about 20 miles and all was well, went out this am and it started ok after 2 tries, smells lurvley, you can smell the chippy at junctions with the window down, performance wise it definately pulls better but you can hear the diesel characteristics of the engine more so i'm gonna knock to timing back a touch tomorrow as it does have a manual advance, tickover in the car for starting.

Goto go and finish my larger test tank off.

When a firend did this on his pug 309, it ran fine for a couple of months. The only thing he needed to be aware of was that the lucas pump was not suitable, but the bosch one was.
After 2 months, his timing belt broke....he had the lucas pump...and it siezed.
Just something to check. He got his info from various news groups
Maybe worth adding some diesel lubrication additives anyway, just in case, but apparently some pumps work perfectly with no modifications or additives.

Did you use the 3% white spirits trick, or just filter it and stick it straight in?

Good to hear things are running smoothly...but BEWARE!!Police/Customs & Excise are cracking down on the use of alternative fuels in dieslels...its an offenc to use fuel on which full duty hasn't been paid and the penalty is 500quid........so watch out..and your car is easy to detect cos the smell is stron.....IMHO....much better off running red diesel....off the road of course ;-)

If you contact C & E you can declare the fuel you are using and pay the revenue monthly.

I totally agree with the above....

I would be careful about using a glo plug to heat anything. Not sure how long they would last before burning out, or may even get too hot?. If you could use the cars cooling system hot water, it would be a lot better.
eg, the likes of a subaru oil cooler in reverse, or similar oil cooler, used as a heater in this case.

Or they could install Roadside sniffers.when you drive past, a special gadget could sniff your pipe fumes. If it sniffs chip oil a camera could take a pic of your car reg, fully automated it could send a fine and a sample of your smell could be sent to the keepers house.

Remember to use methenol (3%) to remove the glicerine. The oil is too thck in this weather and starting cold will be a problem.

Do you know what happens after the 10-14 day wait?? Does it justt eat it or is the glycerine thicker and you strain it out??

Luke,
Check outThisloads of info,i will post some recipe sites up later as well.

You siphon the bio off the top and r then left with the glycerine at the bottom which can be used as soap apparently,i think it only takes a day to seperate unless you wash it.

Stuart,

Heat your oil up to at least 80c,you will get to know if there is any water in it and will have to go to 120 odd to boil it out, filter it through a jey cloth into container when LESS than 60c or it will collapse the container.I dont bother boiling the water out as it settles in the bottom of the pan,so dont tip it in your container.

While it is cooling down to your 60c you need to mix 200ml of methanol with (i have found a level capful from a lemonade bottle is spot on) Caustic soda and totally dissolve this, this mixture is apperently well dodgy so be carefull and mix it in a pint glass.

Tip this methoxide in your container of oil and shake like *** for 20 secs then leave to settle somewhere cold for a day and syphon the bio off the top and off you go,you will be left with glycerin soap on the bottom, hot water will dissolve this.

You can wash the bio if you want,i did wash some but couldn't be arsed with the rest.

I am going to move in the new year and will have buildings to sort a better system out to do this as the kitchen is not ideal.

Oh you need 1 litre of oil to 200ml of methanol

Cheers Mate

This company (http://www.dieselveg.com/prod01.htm) reckon that you don't even have to bother with all that methanol/soap mallarky SO LONG as you heat up the vegetable oil to the right viscosity first.

To quote: "The key to running a Diesel Engine on vegetable oil is to reduce the viscosity of the oil using a Heated Oil Conversion. The higher the temperature the thinner the vegetable oil becomes. Using cold vegetable oil without further modification, although the engine might run, would cause high emissions and possible engine damage, this is not recommended. So the oil must be heated to around 175degrees F (80 C) giving it a fuel viscosity of around 10 centistokes (kinematic viscosity measurement), making it reliable for use in most Diesel engines. "

They are doing a special price just now of only £395 for the DIY kit (including tank, heater, lines etc) and £695 fully fitted.

Sounds like a no-brainer to me, just fill up and go - 40p per litre from the supermarket or 2p a litre from your local chippie!

If anyone takes them up on their offer (or has already), please write back here and tell me how it's gone, as I am quite interested to hear if it really is that simple.
