Question

I really fancy getting a range rover (2 or 3 years old) and wonder what the real day to day costs are.

where are the cheaper places to service them and what sort of costs to expect from 50K miles onwards?

Mum 'n Dad have owned one for 4 years. Its a P reg DSE with around 50,000 miles.

Its been a fairly painful experience. Faults have included a complete auto gearbox rebuild (£well over 2k), air con failure (full dash out job), air suspension problems which are still ongoing (sometimes it doesn't settle and locks the dampers solid so no suspension at all) and general build quality problems. Heated seats have never worked properly. It has also eaten batteries, we have to replace once a year. Now feeling a little tired and rattly, despite only around 50K. Will be replaced with an X5 in January.

Still great cars though, it does drive really well, and nothing matches a Range Rover for prestige. Its still the king IMHO, but be prepared for bills and buy carefully.

Crikey, I know they're renowned for bits bropping off, which I am prepared for, but that's almost ridiculous. is this normal?

...and the diesel version is dog slow.
get a series 2 discovery instead. Quicker (particularly with the official upgrade chip in it) and better handling with ACE.

Yeah, but you're not supposed to drive it like a scoob Avi
Mate has a TD5 series2 discovery and for its size it can shift, and it handles well when you throw it around the lakes, but it helps having the ESP thing on it

A Discovery series 2 TD5 is a better option IMHO. It has better safety and off-road features. I bought a new one over 2 years ago and it has been trouble-free. Dealer is excellent, running costs are cheap (but I did get 3 years free servicing) and insurance is low. It can be easily modded to give 195bhp and 400Nm for about £700. Mpg is 24-30 and fantastic fun off-road. I reckon it's the perfect family car (in 7 seat form).
