Wanted: Nippy, comfy, diesel cruiser
#1
I'll be doing about 35-40k miles a year so I'm looking at buying a big diesel barge, erm I mean cruiser I looked at the Volvo S80 D5 but they've been out less than a year and are still quite pricey. Only want to pay £10k tops.
Any other suggestions?

Or the VW Bora. My sister has one and it is very nice inside and very spritely.
It is similar insode to the Audi but without the badge stigma (sorry but Audis do get a bit of a rep) and the lower price tag.

Yeah didn't really like the A4's handling. I found the A6 better, but then it was a 4.2 quattro. Anyway, not looking for something to knock my socks off - just has to be comfy and not irritatingly slow Will probably buy a weekend/trackday car at some point

Bit a left field one, but they are very cheap try a Citroen Xantia or a C5, both are supremely comfortable on a run, and have lots of toys.
And with the C5 in particular, having just done a search on the citroen website used car locator, plenty of year old C5 HDI's for £10k.

Any of the VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda stable with the 130bhp diesel engine have as much torque as a Scoob. The 110bhp one isn't far off. How about a brand new 110bhp Seat Toledo with lots of toys for £11,000?

Get a Fiat Multipla TD.
No, I'm serious. Loads of room, handles really well, and when you tank along in the fast lane at 90 mph, everyone, including BMW drivers get out of your way. Nippy motor too.
Just would have to learn to get on with its looks (or lack of).

Seriously, had an Alfa 156 TD as a hire car for a few days. Very comfortable, munched the miles and beautiful interior. Didn't like the looks much but I remember thinking to myself, if I had to do loads of mway miles, this would be the car for me.
Cheers

Rover 75
Depreciates like a brick, so you can pick them up reasonably, but the only Rover that was actually proper BMW build quality. 2.0 diesel is all BMW and will go for ever and a day. Not fast, doesnt handle, but very well reviewed, and a bit more kudos than the average rep-mobile

Audi A4 DO Handle....... you just have to ensure it is an A4 sport.
Without, the car feels like a sofa, but with the sport pack and quattro it is excellent, and considering twice the weight and bigger than a scoob it is nearly as good. I have a bhp qauttro sport and it is excellent.

I'm looking at the moment at a Passat 130 TDi Sport Estate. All the toys (climate control, squillion airbags, 6 CD changer etc), six speed gearbox, as much torque as a Scoob, blah, blah. Pushing £20k new, though.

How about a Skoda Superb?
Write ups are excellent. Is basically a stretched Passat with more refinement and toys plus Audi build quality. £16,995 for high spec Comfort with 6 speed 2.5 V6 TDi.

It's not that cheap!
Website shows 2.5 Comfort V6 Tdi is £20,400!
1.9 TDi 130 is £16k is Classic, £17.7k in Comfort.
Though admittedly, you do get a pretty good selection of toys on the Comfort. But the 6 speed box appears to be only on the V6, and I also want an estate... Well, need is a better word than want...

GEJL you are correct with the prices. Shame you need the estate because the Superb is awesome value for money. The 6-speed box is only on the 2.5 V6 TDI, the 1.9 PD engines have 5-speed gearboxes but with their torque it won't mattter.
I was blown away by the Superb when I went car shopping recently with my friend, for the money nothing else touches it. After trying every other diesel at or around 18-21k (Audi A4, MG ZT CDTI, VW Passat, BMW 3-series) it was no contest. The only other one we didn't see because it was out of reach was the Volvo S60 D5, but that looks good if your doing some miles.
Anyway my friend will be picking her Superb up in a few weeks, she's just waiting for it to be built. A 1.9 PD 130 Superb Comfort with 17-inch alloys, ESP and Curtain airbags as extras, plus all the standard kit, all for 18,800 OTR.

A4's do not handle. Ive driven T-sports, Tdi's and quattros. The quattros are ok, the rest are terrible, with a front end that just wallows everywhere, with no feeling to the steering.
Passats are excellent value, and an ideal big mile cruiser.
A4's are also about as big inside as an old mini.
If you really want a big cruiser, what about a Granada Scorpio Ultima. They may look STRANGE, but comfy just doesnt begin to describe it. Diesels dont have a lot of power, but are OK. Also very cheap.

The Superb I refer to is preregistered for sale in the back of Autocar this week.
Only downside to Superb is that the rear seats do not fold down. Major problem and kills it for me. (Has a small section that folds down to fit skis in).
