I will be Scoobless on Thursday, but will have money in the bank to buy a new car. Question is what?
I had intended buying an Evo7 but I am not really sure I want to continue in the Jap/Rally style of car.
I have considered:
944 turbo - Sti levels of performance 10k
E36 M3 coupe evo
M coupe
M roadster
Evo 6/7
Sti
I have a budget of around 20k, but have no requirement to spend all that. I intend doing trips to the ring in it, but not use every single day, as I have a golf to do that in.

2 of those are on my "must have next car list", namely the 944 and the M Coupe.
Check out this weeks Top Marques: a couple of very nice 944 Turbo's for sale with very low miles. Quick, built well, and depreciation proof.
M Coupe's still a little out of range for me on price. Relative rarity should keep prices strong. Wondeful cars though.
Currently looking hard at the early 90's Merc 500E. Real rarity over here, but LHD only. 330bhp and 370 lbs/ft torque. Nice. Plenty in Germany, good 'uns for around 10K. Ultimate Q car. Enough change for a Caterham as well.

I have located a nice M3 Estoril Blue, every option possible.
Does anyone know much about these?
Registered '97, 49000 miles.

Oh and about the M3 you have found.....thats THE best colour, bloody lovely!
Much better than the non evo version, quicker steering, floating discs, 6-speed. Can have problems with the VANOS variable valve system though which is £££ to fix!
An M Coupe would be more though.

From that list the m coupe gets my vote as well.
I went out in one a few months ago with a bloke from work and the engine is just incredible. Instant throttle response, tons of power, great noise and you can deliver bread in it - what more can you want ?
Andy.
p.s. Rockingham any good ?

Hi Dave
Not interested in my Elise then? Cash left over from 20k could buy you an old WRX for blatting around with aswell, not to mention many other interesting bits of kit.

911 3.3 turbo is the daddy....garage in Daventry had a mega rare extra wide body flat nose one early this summer, looked fcukin awesome and was tuned as well. Think they wanted bout £30k though!
Nearly tried to get a test drive in it when i was driving an '89 3.2 carrera cab for a week....but ickle me wasnt cheeky enough!

Right the below are very different cars I'll comment on your choices first -
944 turbo - Sti levels of performance 10k
Go very well, handling can be fun in the wet, but very well balanced.
E36 M3 coupe evo
Nice car, read a little about these on here and in Evo first and was expecting it to be a crap car. The M3 feels very quick once rolling, handling is good and is very well built - a definite all rounder, but still lacking 'edge' in my opinion. Also watch out because this model has a VANOS problem which often occurs at 40-60k and costs ~£2k to fix
M coupe
M roadster
I'll do these together, the coupe looks like a scimitar, and the roadster like a hairdressers car, again I would imagine that the earlier cars suffer from the VANOS problem, but the later cars use a 325bhp version of the new M3's 343bhp engine. Personally I'd go for a standard M3 in preference as practicality is poor!
Evo 6/7
Much better handling/tuning potential, compared with a scooby. Short service intervals, very poor fuel consumption and tiny petrol tank ruled it out for me, but otherwise a fantastic car!
Sti
Yawn - been there done that etc etc... Still great cars, and IMHO a great balance between mondeo and evo
And the others mentioned
968 - Never tried, still looks like an old school porker...
RX7 - Rebuilds @ 60k, light weight, very well balanced, crap fuel consumption.
Supra - Auto - very disappointing, 6 speed manual TT - Good car, but watch it go sideway suddenly go sideways as the second turbo comes on
Lotus Carlton - Looks very dated to me know, but still f*cking quick.
New ITR - Not that quick, great handling, but I wouldn't buy a new car.
HSV - Looks like an entertaining choice, bit like a modern LC.
R33 GTR - This is what I choose in a similar situation - Does everything I wanted it to!
911 Turbo - Probably have to buy an old one (or LHD) to hit budget - big running costs, low deprecation.
Thats my summary

Why do people even consider the M coupe? Wouldn't it be nicer to drive a car that doesn't make a new age scoob look attractive?
IMHO, the M3 would be choice of those, also has the more modern rear axle arrangement IIRC, as the roadster coupe can be a bit of a monster in the wet.
What else? If I had that much spare, plus a sensible "everyday" car, I'd spend it on a Caterham Superlight. Almost 300bhp/tonne, plus serious handling, brakes etc. Were only about £21k new, so you could get change for a 2 year old one. Very few people will beat you round the ring in a well driven one. Having a friend who regularly tracks his, they are awesome bits of kit, he regularly beats serious machinery on track, Ferraris, Porkers etc are often easy meat.

I dont really think that an EVO6's fuel consumption is that much different to an STi's - Autocar recorded 19.9MPG (Scooby) vs 23.1MPG (EVO6)
Just think that the fuel tank is a lot smaller so it needs filling up more frequently.

I agree its v difficult to replace the scoob so my vote goes to...
Old shape STI or P1.
Have considered just about everything else on the list. Sorry but the e36 M3 is just boring to drive. 944 Turbos are nice but dont expect it to be cheaper than anything else on your list if you intend to service with a Porker dealer.
The MCoupe is v quick in a straight line and exciting round corners but a bit of a mess in the dynamics department. I have seriously considered one on 3 occasions but after each long test drive I have got back into the scoob driven the same bit of road faster and more easily and wondered what possessed me to consider the BM in the first place.
EVOs - looking at the fact that no one can sell one of these at the moment (see recent MLR threads and for sale section) you might pick up a bargain.

I get an M3 (no bias at all )
But - if like you said its only a weekend toy then the Mcoupe is a better bet - mind you i'd rather be seen in an Mroadster. Am considering the roadster myself
Try www.bm3w.co.uk fo info.

Go for an M Coupe, you won't regret it! It's got the best power / weight ratio in the BM range. Go for an earlier model without DSC, it's more fun . Just make sure that it is covered by the BM warranty (this can be extended every year).
I've had one for 2.5 years and love every drive I've had in it. It's a real handful so concentration is needed when taking corners.
Thanks
Sonu

If I had that sort of money now, there's no question what I'd have. I'd get someone to build me an Evo200, the kit car derivative of the Ford RS200 Rally car. STILL looks the dogs after all this time, and STILL holds the 0-60 acceleration record for a road car, at least according to Guinness.
