What cars have loads of tuning potential like a Skyline but aren't as big and heavy!?
#1
I love the idea of owning a car that can produce 400+ bhp without breaking the bank in upgrades (I know it's not exactly cheap to buy though) - just like the Skyline. But the problem is that I think it's just too big and heavy which compromises the advantages of this power and is not as agile as it could be. So, can anyone think of a similar type of car without these disadvantages (EVO's and Scooby's excluded)?

None that I can think of that'll go to mental BHPs and still be driveable as an everyday motor.
Dare I say a Ford of the Cosworth variety?

How about a Mazda RX7 - Rotary engine needs rebuilding @ 60-80k so why not buy one cheap due for a rebuild and build a brilliant spec?
Suppose also a supra but its only 20kg less than the skyline and looses 4WD.
911 Turbo also fits the bill, though probably too pricey!
Also I bet a Lotus Esprit V8 Turbo could easily be tuned from 350bhp to 400bhp...
Audi RS4 (ok so that starts with 370bhp, but it doesn't take that much work to get 400bhp from a normal S4 (say 5-6k I think!))
Let me think some more!

Buy the way what skyline have you driven? Most people are surprised by just how agile skylines are, but yes the 1470-1580kgs as standard does make them slower than an equivalent powered scooby, though at 120mph + I suspect it would be a different story!

Pulsars are rubbish and only good for 300ish bhp.
TVRs are already fully tuned from the factory, just like BMWs M cars are. Push em any further and they become even more unreliable.
Maybe a Nissan 300nsx. Still big and heavy, and rwd. The turbos on 'em are hardly in use on unmodded ones though.
