Was driving home late last night through a serious or roundabouts and long duelled straights. It was pretty much just me and a white Celica thing and we took our chances to go for it in the straights. I'm not too hot on my Celica knowledge so I'd like to know what it was, it was white (not that that matters) and it had an air intake scoop on the bonnet. I'm pretty sure it had GT-4 on the back and the guy had a non-standard and lound zorst.

We floored it and bizzarly (I thought) acceleration was equal up till about 4k rpm (I thought my ickle turbo would give him a hiding with it's quick spool up, etc). In the midrange and top end I reeled him in and then passed him with relative ease. In short the scooby was quite a bit quicker in a straight line.

It was a good bit of fun and the celica driver was very well behaved at one point when we got close to another road user. We both got well clear of him before going for it again.

Anyone got some stats for the Celica?

If it's a GT-4, and I would guess it is anyway coz anything else
wouldnt give you a good run, then its a 2 litre turbo 4x4. quite fast little motors.

I used to have one, 230 bhp, nice looking motors, but to be honest they are no good on a twisty road, hence I dont have it anymore.

Did it have 'pop up' lights or 4 'bug' eyes.

Pop up lights means its a 185, 200-220bhp 0-60 high 6's to low 7's

Bug eye is a 205, 240-250bhp 5.7 to 60

were a bit on the 'chunky' side tho, its because weve got proper paintwork

I thoght about buying one of these before settling on the Scooby. Aren't there two versions of the GT-4? The normal GT-4 and a GT-4 WRC which has a bit more power and a few other extra bits. Thought about the WRC but for the kind of money they were asking ie between £11K-£13K it was in Type R terroitory so decided it wasn't quick enough in the end with 0-60 times of around 6 seconds. Don't know how tuneable they are though.

ST185 89-92/3 and st205 93/4-96/7, i85's pop up lights standard around 200bhp (o-60 7 secs approx), easily tuned to 240-250 with bleed valve and FCD, 205 approx 240bhp (0-60 5-6 secs approx) the 3s-gte engine in the celicas/mr2 turbos is very tuneable with guys in the states getting close to 600bhp, fensport have ne at 340bhp in a corrolla wrc lookalike

cheers

nice motor just TOO heavy

Only timed it once, value my clutch - not very accurate either, m8 with a stop watch , EVO has it down as 5.2 I guess they may have used proper timing equipment

Surprised quite a few Scooby's, nothing in it with a 'classic' UK over a 5 mile twisty - maybe 1 or 2 car lengths, and thats probably down to the driver, certainly not enough for him to overtake or me to overtake him.

Main problem is weight, 1360Kg unlaiden -add some petrol and a me your looking at 1450-1460kg easy

Why did I buy it, and not a scoob? wanted a coupe, didnt want the wrong kind of attention (had my Integrale 'nicked') its relatively easy to tune upto 350bhp without it going bang...oh and I paid £7K for it

Only difference between a WRC and a standard 4 is a few 'homogalation' bits, such as plumbed but not running waterspray & antilag you also got a high rear wing and a little bonnet spoiler

Well pointed out John, I forget that not everyone reading this will know my car. I've got a scoobysport backbox, and a TEK2.5 (ish) and a dawes to control the boost (set at 1.2bar). I think it would have been pretty tight between it and a standard UK but I still think the scoob would have edged it. Also judging by the noise it made he didn't have standard bits either.

John your fancy fuelling at the top end really showed cause that's when I did the most damage even though boost was dropping through the floor with little ol TD04L.

Not 100% sure as I wasn't paying a lot of attention but I think it was a bug eye version. It was quite a bulbous (sp?) looking car and I'd say it's straightline performance was hot-hatch like.

The guy I bought my scooby off, has a WRC GT-4, the nicest and most outrageous celica I have ever seen. I wish i knew how to post a picture of it to show you guys. Its £10k........
Geared for over 200mph, has lots of gauges, and is pathetically fast. Also has rollcage etc etc blah blah
He says theres only 40 in the country?

Cool

Saxoboy,

Have a look on www.gt4oc.co.uk and see if you can spot it on there (long-shot). It sounds like it could be an ST185 with pop up lights ?? Even so not many gt-4's in white so it could be an owners club car ?

So what bhp / torque are you running / year etc ?

If you want I'll post a quick message on the owners club yahoo group to see if anyone has recently been blown away by a scoob.

Cheers

Feel free to post away! What is now confusing me is off the pictures shown it would (if anything) have been the bug eye. However, the air scoob was like a slit in the bonnet as opposed to the EVO style vent shown in the picture. Curse me poor Toyota knowledge.

Not had my car dyno'd but I'd guess its got between 240-50bhp at the moment...JB will know better. Its an MY99 by the way.

Wink

Definatley an ST185 then as all the ST205's (Bugeye) have the same vent. It was only the 185 that had different bonnets.

It could have been a maxxed up GT (ST202) (2litre 172bhp normally aspirated with loud zorst)Has bben known for one of these beasties to do a 1/4 mile in 16ish

Did it have a huge spoiler on the rear - or fairly flat to the boot aka my97/8 scoob ?

Just sticking up for the gt4 corner

On that GT4 site there are three cars shown. It was very similar to the bugeye one to the right but there is no way it was any of the other two without a huge amount of styling mods.

Weight is the bane of any GT-Four owner, they are a bit porky. However this weight is down to the fact that everything is completely overengineered, and consequently VERY suitable for modding. Aside from the Skyline and Supra lumps, the 3S-GTE engine is the most moddable around. Check out these links:

http://www.gunter.ws/videos/celica_vs_bike.ram
http://www.gunter.ws/videos/celica_vs_skyline.avi

was it one of those you raced? Harney is putting out about 600bhp, all through the stock gearbox.

The Top Secret Supra runs a 3S-GTE engine from an ST205 GT4, and is putting out 986 bhp! AFAIK this is the highest output from this engine.

Totally agee with the comments on the 3S-GTE lump, its highly over engineered and capable of loads. The boys in the US have some really good 3-400Rear Wheel horsepower MR2 Turbos....

I had a Rev3 (Same as ST205) MR2 Turbo before the Type R and that is knocking out a genuine 340bhp/300lbft from 1.3 bar (sold it to a mate)

The weight is the problem with the St205, but isn't the WRC model a bit lighter...? Performance/handling is excellent on these cars, can't wait for WI/Unichip After these mods, should be looking into the 300 + bhp.

I've noticed that there is alot of people that respect the GT4, whether its a 165, 185 or the beast 205.

The 205 WRC version isn't that much lighter but it does come with spraybar and antilag (bang bang) as standard..only really need a relay to activate them!! same bhp tho..

Are you sure about the Anti-Lag System? I heard the system was completely removed with only some of the ducting\tubing still in place. This is just what I read\heard when I was looking at buying one so it may not be correct but I did hear this from many different sources. I think they couldn't put it in cause of some road legislation stuff and if you tried to put it in afterwards it would be alot of bother.

UXG.

It does have the antilag/spraybar, but all that needs to activate the spraybar is a relay. But to activate the antilag, the ecu needs changing. A signal from the ecu will activate the antilag, how, I haven't got a clue...

Kev..

I know they kill turbo's and manifolds but I'd love to have an anti-lag and be able to switch it on once in a while. I have heard one or two cars with them on and the noise is unreal. Would love to be able to frighten little old ladies with one

(Only joking about the little old ladies by the way before some sensitive types get on at me)
