Question

We have been looking at getting a more practical car. We have been looking at Ford Focus' but thought that a Hyundai might offer more value. How reliable are they? Anyone driven one? Maybe looking at the new Accent...

No idea what these are like though. Are they worth concidering?

Cool

Depreciation on this car is going to be horrific. What car figures are as follows :

Hyundai Accent 1.3 GSi 5dr £8,495
1 Year old = £4,461
2 Years old = £3,811
3 Years old = £3,350

Focus depreciation is a lot better than this, but Fords do depreciate hellishly aswell. If you're after a new small / medium car with a long warranty for a lot less money (ie good value) but still want reasonable depreciation take a look at:

Honda Civic or Jazz
Toyota Corolla
New Mini
Daihatsu YRV or Sirion....5 year warranty / free servicing...

IMHO

Mind you I don't like Fords

Cheers,

Rich

Thanks,

I knew that depreciaion would be a problem, but even with the wifes current car, it's been pretty bad (R reg MX3). I thought they may have improved the cars recently with the new model.

I think we will keep looking for a decent Focus, or maybe look at some Rover 25s.

PS. It's not the scoob we are trading in. Just the wifes MX3.

I would also buy something other than an Accent.

I have nothing at all against Hyundais either as we had a Lantra once which had excellent reliability and was under-rated.

I agree with the Focus - especially bought as a demo or 12 month old car - scour the internet and you'll see the choice.

I'd rather have a low mileage 1998 Impreza Sport 5 door than an Accent. Have you thought about that ? Have a look at the Subaru Used Car search - you can pick them up with fairly low miles.

I was a hyundai technician a couple of years ago and have to say they're really good cars! The new Accent is really good I think, for the money and what it's supposed to do obviously! The build qaulity is good, good panel gaps, good engines and an excelent warranty system. I'd go for at least the 1.5 and deffo power steering tho. A point to consider is the free servicing, four years now I believe?

After Hyundai I went to a Ford dealership, for me, the Focus is pretty much better than the Accent in every way, they drive superbly! The only down points for the Focus I can think of are poor rear visibilty as far as parking is concerned and they had a problem with the tailgate rusting round the chrome thing.

In short, they're both great cars.... feckin lot of help I am

The wife owned a Hyundai for a couple of years and it was a perfectly reliable car with good build quality. Dealer was very good as well.
We bought car when 18 months old for 50% of new price so some other poor sod suffered the initial depreciation. We hardly lost much money in 20,000+ miles. I'd buy another second hand but only a fool would buy new!
