Question

I can't help thinking that I'm going to seriously consider an X-type Jag when my current Scoob 98MY gets a bit older. (Or a lot older if my wife has anything to do with it).

But with a Scoob you can always upgrade things, or at least feel as if the opportunity to modify everything is there. Do people do that with Jags ? Can you get the X-Type ECU remapped ? Do people modify them at all, or is it The Wrong Thing To Do ?

And is there any kind of online board for Jag discussions - I couldn't find anything with a few searches. A lot of the fun of a Scoob is the user community - I'd hate to lose that.

Anyone know ? (And before you ask it would have to be the 3 litre Sport once the second-hand price comes down a bit...)

I ditched the STI and bought a X-Type 3.0L Sport at the end of June. I've had 'pipe & slippers' comments from all of the Scoob clan ever since, but I don't regret buying it for a minute.

I was getting tired of the ludicrous insurance and other running costs for Imprezas, and after 6 years of owning scoobs wanted something a bit more grown-up and a bit less max-power, but with the same sort of fun 4WD handling. The X-Type gives me all that - I'm very pleased with it, and my wife actually likes the car too!

Pics here, here and here, if you're interested.

The main forum I've found for it Jag Lovers. Crap name, but not a bad site.

Re: modifications, Arden do all sorts of stuff, including a replacement ECU/exhaust which supposedly adds another 35bhp to the 3.0L V6's standard 231bhp output. I've no idea how much of a difference this makes, although I'd love to find out. Arden are officially recognised by Jaguar, but I'm still waiting to find out from my dealer whether or not these upgrades would adversely affect my warranty (must chase him up and find out).

Thanks Mark... I'm wary of the pipe and slippers stuff but maybe a big wing on the back and some gold wheels would dispel that (half joking !)

I had seen the Arden stuff, it was the only relevant thing that a search on "Jaguar X-type tuning" came up with. Looks expensive though - not like sticking on a Dawes device !

How did the insurance compare to the Scoob ?

It's complicated, because I had a claim on my STI back in 1999, and a 3-week ban from my UK scoob in July 1998.

However, the best quote I had for a renewal in June on the STI was around £1,600, which is about what I was paying last year.

The X-Type cost just under a grand, and that includes insuring my wife who only passed her test in Feb this year. I couldn't find a single company in the UK who would insure her on the STI (all required at least a year's experience, unsurprisingly).

BTW, just beem having a look at JagLovers, and it's very US-oriented. I can't find any other decent forums, so I'm going to set one up. I've just registered x-type.org. I'll let you know when it's up and running.

Hey, this sounds like progress. You get the board up and running, I read all about the cars and then go and buy one !

Incidentally, I just had a look at Jag Lovers and in the thread about 'buzzing coming from the dash' someone mentions:

>Here is are two similar stories from guys with the same problem
>from another the Jaguar X-Type bulletin board:

so maybe there is another board somewhere. Or maybe he means a different thread on Jag Lovers.

Anyway thanks for the insurance stuff.

Wink

Right, it's online now, although the DNS is still propagating.

Go to X-Type Forums.

I'll do a proper logo when I get the chance.
