Evo recall
#1
This was announced yesterday (Japan time) I believe:
"Mitsubishi Motors Corp announced a recall of approximately 37,000 Lancer Evolutions (of which 5000 were sold outside Japan) to fix a potential exhaust/emissions problem. There have been 14 cases reported of the oxygen sensor being damaged or broken by a build up of moisture in the exhaust system.
The recall covers vehicles made between January 7, 1998 and April 3, 2002."

Just got this off the MLR....
Reported today here: http://www.drive.com.au
(sorry if old news)
Troubled car maker Mitsubishi Motors Corp said on Tuesday it would spend Y20 million ($A312,000) recalling 37,000 sporty Lancer Evolution sedans in Japan and abroad to fix an exhaust problem.
Moisture in the exhaust pipe could clog up an oxygen sensor causing it to crack and malfunction.
As a result, the car may release more exhaust fumes than necessary, explained Mitsubishi spokesman Mitch Hayes.
"We will replace the oxygen sensors with new ones," he said. About 32,000 Lancer Evolutions would be recalled in Japan and 5000 from overseas markets, mainly Britain, New Zealand and the Middle East.
Mitsubishi has received 14 reports of such a problem, but it has not caused any accidents.
The recall covers vehicles made between January 7, 1998 and April 3, 2002.
Mitsubishi's image was tarnished after it confessed in August 2000 to having failed to inform authorities about at least 64,000 customer complaints over faulty vehicles since 1977, opting to repair the vehicles itself instead of issuing costly model-wide recalls

Sheepsplitter,
The oxygen sensor in EVO's is fitted to a small exhaust housing just off the turbo!
So even if you have swapped the downpipe, decat and full system you will still be affected

No one should feel left out - they did it all over the world (hide faults and the accidents they caused).
Imagine if it had come out into the open more recently, a much bigger fuss would have ben made Records etc were found hidden in changeroom lockers etc ferchrissakes
Those bad days should be over...

It was reported in the HK press last week regarding the recall. Mitsubishi is playing very safe nowadays, after the scandal last year of not recalling various cars with the same problems stretching back to 1977.
I have not heard of a manufacturer recalling cars due to engine problems, due to the massive costs involved. They would rather deal with it case by case when a warranty claim is made. BMW never issued a recall on their V8 engines, despite the many cases of engine failures in the US due to high sulphur content in fuel.
Nevertheless, recalls seems to be a monthly occurrence, in Japan at least. There's a magazine (which I think is Mag X) with at least a page on each issue describing recalls, with description of problems & the parts involved.

I agree with Mr Burns 100%. Subaru dealers in the main, and I formally ask any dealer NOW to come on this board and tell US they don't use monkeys/apes or goats to fix cars. When we all know that 99% of Dealers Techs wouldn't know what a Turbo or a rear diff/Gearbox looks like because they are w*nk and no-one has shown them a picture
I believe Subaru have and need a serious problem before they can identify it, because they simply do not have a clue!!!!
