Need the most economic car.

Running my STi on a 50 mile round trip each day I use alot of petrol and put many miles on the clock, so I am looking for a very economic, cheap to run commuter. Preferable 4 door.

The new Clio Diesels give amazing economy. I have a Clio 1.2 16 valve petrol and even that is pretty good. Getting around 42 MPG in town and 50 MPG on a run.
Don't forget that depreciation is a much bigger cost than fuel though. Makes me laugh these people spending 18K on a Golf TDi and claiming they got the car to save money on fuel.

The ol' Vectra 2.0 TD is my mule ATM.
Cost £8k 2 years ago - worth £4k now. I've never seen below 42mpg & that includes 400 miles flat out (105mph) or equiv. Generally get 48mpg @ av. 85mph, so more if your foot is a bit lighter in fact probably a well in excess of 55mpg @ 70?
Boring but does the job, allowing me to keep PTMW! for fun

I bought a cheap as chips G-reg 2.0GLi Carlton for £325 ran it for 7 months and 8,000 miles, then threw it away. In that time it would do upto 36mpg at 85mph on the motorway, never broke down, and was extremely comfortable. Motoring will not get any cheaper than that, unless of course you can sell the same car at the end for some money, but to be honest mine had earned its money so i retired it to the local breakers. Anything more expense to buy and you have to factor in depriciation (OUCH).

Get a Daewoo Matiz
I only found out after I bought mine its the cheapest car to run per mile there is (or it was when I looked in What car last year)
It has 5 doors
Free 3 year warranty
Free 3 year AA
Totally free servicing for three years!!!
Free advanced driving lessons and test
6 grand new
Laugh as you fill it up for 21 quid (i get approx 50 mpg)
Wet yourself as you insure it for less than £300
Chuckle demonically as you realise with an estimated 50% residual after three years its only cost you 3 grand.
If you can find a better deal I'd like to hear it.
I also bought mine because a commute a long way each day but also because sometimes there are places you dont want to park a scoob.
BTW I do not work for Daweoo
Cheers

Do you not mean chuckle along with pedestrians who are pi$sing themselves
lauging at you in Noddys car.
(sorry Dr Nick - but you dont leave a scoob at home and drive one of these
no matter what the cost saving) all IMHO only

Bought an Escort 1.6 Ghia, F reg for £300. Put 52,000 miles on it in a year. Got 42mpg, never broke down. Used it as a trade-in for the Skoda and got £1000 for it. First car I've ever had that appreciated!

A person after my own heart TaviaRS. If you want cheap motoring reliable old cars is the way to go. With the state of the market at the moment, just have a look on Ebay for some cheap reliable motors. Anything new will depreciate and depreciation of £3,000 over three years is nearly £20 quid a week. In a cheap motor that's half the weekly cost of your petrol I'll bet, just gone into thin air....
They may look nasty and have no style, but dirt cheap cars will save you a fortune in the long run, and just think of the mods you might be able to afford then.

DAC, this thread is about the cheapest motor to run and not about being stylish. Markys already has an STI.
It sounds like Markys and myself are very much in the same boat. We are not made of money and commute over 50 miles a day.
I intend to keep my scoob for about 5 years. By then the difference between it being a Euro import and the UK spec car at resale will be very small. In order to keep the car for 5 years I want to keep the miles down to about the UK average. Having a second small car allows me to do this.
IMO there are times when it is best not to be in a car that gets a second glance. And if a second glance is only to have a good laugh (as opposed to consider stealing, vandalising, or stopping by the police for no good reason) then my choice of second motor is perfect. In fact nobody does laugh and if they do what do I care. I am comfortable in driving a small car since I know it does not reflect on my masculinity or the size if my genitals.
Reffro’s suggestion is the alternative to my solution. Buying an old banger is definitely cheaper than a brand new Matiz. The “disposable car” policy can only really work if you have two cars. Sooner or later the old banger will break down unless you are very lucky. Possibly at an inconvenient moment. BUT because you have a second car and if you have recovery insurance you can switch back the your main car whilst you decide if you will foot the repair bill or replace with another banger. My brother successfully ran a series of old Minis this way for several years. If you know your way around a lug wrench this can be a very cheap option indeed.
Cheers

Thanks Dr Nick you identified the only problem in my fiendish scheme to save money, its no good if the car isn't reliable.
As you can see there are two very good ways to run a car on very little money, just choose the one your most comfortable with. Without a second car though, you may find yourself in trouble if the cheap car you buy gives up the ghost.
But there are some genuine older cars out there that will give reliable service. I saw a M-reg 95,000 mile Omega 2.0i GLS sell for £1200, and it had 12 months MOT, and service history. That's the sort of car that gives maximum comfort and will see 150,000 miles with ease. Even if you don't want to spend that much there is so much out there its obscene. I was reading that anything that is not genuinely worth £1500 in part ex, now will not be considered saleable by dealers. So that leaves plenty out there for the canny private buyer, trawl the private ad's in the local papers or get to an auction and see for yourself.

I have the same problem - 60 mile round trip in the Scoob to work.
I bought a B reg 18 year old Ford Fiesta for £80 I spent £15 on geting it running OK. £57 for six months tax £85 for six months insurence...Thats it. It also runs on fumes I have cut my petrol bill by 2/3rds and I can now keep my scooby imaculate. I can leave it anywhere. Parts are dirt cheap.
It will 80 on a motorway and will easily do 50-70 down B roads.
It is a complete rusty shed but it does the job and is quite a laugh to drive.
My 300bhp Scooby my ultimate performance car
My 950cc Fiesta my ultimate cheap shed.
Just an idea - but an ageing Ford may just do the trick.
Cheers
