Hi I am an Australian Student without a lot of money. I currently have a 1981 mazda rx-7 (wich isn't in the greatest nick, it has a little bit of rust) and am thinking of changing. What do you guys think are the best sports cars from the early 80's (not including the more expensive cars like porsche)? I am thinking of maybee geting a better rx-7, a starion, a cordia, a turbo pulsar or a peugeot 205.
Thanks.

I have a Triumph TR7 Convertible. 1980

Its a personal thing, you either like them or hate them.

Cheapish car though, convertible motoring, not many around, definately gets looks and can get get nearly all spares cheap.

Dont suppose ther are many in Oz

Hows about an Audi Quattro Turbo (UR quattro) the rally icon of the 1980's.

2.1 5 cyl turbo, 4wd. Fantastic piece of motoring hertitage.

Used to own one, was fantastic.

Like Stuart - go for a TR7 v8 convertible - get them for peanuts, cheap to insure - and a heck of a laugh. If you thought scooby's where loud - my TR sounded like an F1 car (but not as many revs huh)

Quattro Sports ?
As rare as rocking horse ....

But they do exist at a massive premium for an original one. I'd love one.

306BHP, 17PSI boost

There were 214 cars produced between February 1984 and January 1986....

Pug 205 1.9 GTi. Still takes some beating.

On the Quattro Sport, i too thought this would be a good idea, back in about 1989, at roughly the top of the market. Contacted a dealer who had one, was faxed the details. It wasn't a minter, in fact pretty ordinary by most standards. And the price?

£185,000

Don't know if anyone ever got close to paying that, but the memory of the experience still makes me chuckle. I never even got to see it, i couldn't waste someone's time to that extent!

In one of the mags about 10 years ago, there was a German coachbuilder who would take your standard Ur Quattro, saw it in half and take out 6 inches, or whatever it was, uprate the engine and add a bonnet with extra grilles in. For about £10,000, which seemed like a far more sensible option to me...!

A company called Dialynx in Swindon will also do a similar cut and modify from a "UR" to a sport quattro. From what I've seen they do a fantastic job !

It looks some what brutal though.

Just scrape into the 90's, and buy a legacy turbo. They are as cheap as most cars mentioned so far, and probably cheaper than most. Performance wise, value for money doesnt get better. Build quality is excellent, and there are so many bolt on goodies you can get. Why even consider another budget performance car???

The 205's were billed as being one of the best handling cars around in the 80's. However they did have a nasty trait on the limit which could put you through a hedge backwards if you weren't carefull !

This is my 205 1.9GTi which I compete in,used in Hillclimb / sprints. Currently modified to around 150BHP at the wheels

In fact a 205 spin is shown here ! Basically I was being a muppet. Far too fast, and lift off oversteer
