Road Holding Question....
#1
would putting a better set of tires on my MX5 improve it's road holding ability? And if yes can anyone recommend which ones.
I know she'll never perform like my WRX but at least I expect not to lose the back end every time I corner.
more fun than a skid pan in the wet.

If you are 'losing' the back end, you must be on bald or remould tyres. If the back end is drifting under power, get used to it, they are designed that way. It's what makes them so much fun

Are the imported MX5's any different from the UK model then in terms of power - are you sure the guy is not just a super-human driver !!!
I ask because:-
I have a 99 Impreza, and also recently had a Mazda 323 1.8 Twin cam lightly modded to about the same as the new MX5 up from the std 136bhp (exhaust & filter). I used to own a Legacy Turbo a few years back as well
If all three cars were running properly. I'd put the figures like this for 0-60 and 30-70:
MX5: Low to mid 7 seconds for both
Legacy: Mid 6 seconds for both
Impreza: Mid 5 seconds for both
The 323 I had was very light so the power to weight ratio is very good (the MX5 isn't bad either) but I'd have thought that the Legacy could get all the power down easily.
ps Used to love my Legacy when no-one had even heard of them - you must still enjoy burning BM's off ! I had an old shape 328i driver going 'loopy' to keep up once

Yes it is an import 6 speed 1.8i - when I sneak super unleaded into her - it can shift big time, great fun on a dry day and in a straight line but I guess that's what they're designed for. In the wet she is rather too skittish for my liking I will have a look at the tire situation. Thanks

MX5s are the other car I love as well as Scoobies.
I had an Eunos with lowered springs fatter rims on with goodyear eagle venturas on them. It was the dogs nuts when it came to fun.
Go for Goodyears probably F1s. As they lasted for ages and had fantastic grip. The best tyre I have ever had on any car.
Best wishes
Steve

BTW, you may not expect it to out-perform a WRX, but if it is an imported 1.8iS with a six speed box, I can tell you it will be as quick in a straight line, and through the bends, as any standard UK spec Subaru, all the while being a damned sight more enjoyable. I know this because Olly's got one and it leaves my lightly modded Legacy Turbo for dead.
I wouldn't like to drive one every day, over my route to work, in the middle of winter though.
Editted coz I carnt spel
