The old Type R was a 1.6, the new one is a 2 litre.......
Does he mean the old Jap import version or the new one?
The 2 litre can be supercharged, not sure about the old one.........

Er, Type R just out of interest any idea how many old shape CTRs have made it into the UK? And what are they selling for at the moment?

Cant say for an old one, but the new ones are good. Very neutral, and extremely controllable on the throttle (benefit of being NA!) Some lift off oversteer available, and was even able to drift it round Thurliegh when the tyres had got a bit too hot!
Edit to say - on the road the back does seem a little light sometimes (gets unsettled over the bumps in the road) but its never let go - and you'd have to be driving at suicidat speeds for it to do so IMO. On a good track surface its fine.

Hi,
Having the usual "bollox in the pub" chat with someone the other day and he reckons his mate has a Civic Type R with 295bhp.
I thought this sounded like sh1te but just checking before I make a fool of myself.
Surely it would have to be majorly modded and turbo'd at least.
And even so, it's still only a 1.6. He'd have to have spent buckets surely!
Anyone know what these things kick out?
Rich

In standard for the old CTR (1.6) has 185BHP, and can be tuned to 230BHP, a 320BHP Turboed monster was made and hit just under 200 mph, unfortunatly the driver whos company made it died trying to beat it, how ever Top Fuel recreated another, this was Turboed with thousands chucked into it.
The new one is also a possibility but as far as I know no one has made one.
I don't think there will be one in the UK, if there is watch out, but wheelspin in 3rd and 4th gear would put me off driving it.

Hmm, how'd you ge that sort of power through 1st gear in a front wheel drive car? any traction control would just count out the extra horses. motorway driving would be interesting though

IMHO i dont count nitrous as being a modification, its a cheap way to get power but a modification IMHO is a permenant feature, not something that can be added to your car (and cause damage cos nothing else has been upgraded to help sort the power hike out).
I think you would have to spend alot of money to get 295bhp out of a civic type r, you would need t/c for starters, uprated brakes, lots of engine work, new ecu etc otherwise you wouldnt have reliability (and lots of torque steer!)
Rich, its possible but i dont think an exhaust and filter would do that

Not with a normally aspirated engine...
I know of one that has a load of Mugen tuning bits from Japan on it and is *very* quick, but even that is only around the 240bhp mark and that cost a bl00dy fortune.
Think it's a case of "pub bullsh!t" again!
Have heard there is a supercharger kit being done though!

is nitrous not permanent then?
fill it up when it runs out - much like petrol.
cheapest £ per bhp?
sounds like a modification to me?

JJ,
1. nitrous can be very dangerous, especially if it leaks but the worst part is, is that the strain it can put on internals without you knowing it.
2. Nope i dont class it as a modification because it isnt permanent, when you run out you have to then go and purchase some more, try doing that on a sunday! you can get fuel on a sunday and thats an esential part of running a car.
I know for a fact that my car has modifications, PPP, downpipe, brakes and alloys. All these work in conjunction with eachother, the brakes are there for the increased performance given by the PPP and D/P, the alloys for a better ride and grip (due to much better tyres )
3. I can go out all day and rag me car i know the only thing ill run out of is fuel (readily avialable at my local shell garage ) and it'll be there much longer than 10mins worth of nitrous

Sorry ,should have made it clearer, the car is definately the old import type with the 1.6 engine.
Not the new one.
I think it's utter bollox personally.
He has a rear number plate with "don't bother" printed on too.
Think I might get some with "why not?" on
Rich

I don't know, although in 2 years of ownership I have only known of 14, this includes ones I have seen for sale in the Trader etc.
There are a couple of variants, which are missing the Recaros, ABS, PAS, Electrics, A/C, at a guess somewhere around 7/8K - 10/11K dependant on condition. The old CTR holds a good residual in Japan, so few come over, as a lot get turned into Race Cars.
I love mine, and it will embarass some of the higher engine spec cars. You have to Rev the nads off it, but thats half the fun, I had 146mph 3 up, with luggage on a recalibrated speedo in Germany in May, it must be the quickest 1.6 N/A, my midly modded (Exhaust/Filter/Coilovers/Brakes) car did a 14.9 1/4 mile, and recorded 5.9 0-60 (In standard spec) (Book states 5.7), not bad for me.
Best thing is it never goes wrong, you can hit the Rev limiter all day safe in the knowlege it won't go bang.

Just out of intrest does this CTR owner live around Manchester ?
If so I know of him, recently put a 5Zigen exhaust on. Talks utter ***** most the time, he posts on the Honda Forum.

Being a rare import - IF it did go wrong, who would fix it? Honda dealers seem a bit snotty at the best of times.
What about insurance? Nightmare or not too bad? And does the lack of low down torque make it a pig to drive around town?
ITR prices coming down now - may be a better bet.

I will totally honest with my modded CTR cost me £900 insurance a year in a high risk area, Garaged, cat 1, FNCB, no previous, clean licence.
I always want something differant and special and the CTR is that, the Teg is marginally better thou.
As for parts and servicing Ive had no issues, in fact the 1st service it went in for I got for free, as the service manager was that intrested in the car. The engine is the same as the Teg except a shorter stroke, it shares the same braking system, clutch, Gearbox, seats etc. The only thing that would be a pain to get hold of is the B16B engine but if it did go (no chance, ones never gone bang yet), get a B18C from the Teg. ABP in Crewe know my car inside and out.
