Pros
Well balanced
Rewarding to drive
Lots of mods for the K20a engine (220bhp standard)
Not as bad on fuel vs a Subaru
Reliable (Chain driven)

Cons
Gutless below 5k - especially if you're used to a Subaru
Can be a lot to insure
Does not have a flat 4. ;-)

I did enjoy mine, but I "upgraded" to an STI from a DC5. Not sure about going the other way unless I wanted to save ££. See if you can take it for a spin, only way you'll know.

All I know about the DC5 is that you really need to find one with the 'C pack' option. Adds a rear wiper and a few other good bits.

Apart from that, I'm assuming it's a relatively similar drive / power delivery to an EP3 civic type R, which I can honestly say was one of the most dissapointing drives I've ever had. I was expecting so much from this VTEC 'kick' (after the fanboys had hyped it up so much), almost like boost coming on.......oh how dissapointed I was lol! Literally no torque below about 5k. Not my cuppa at all. I'd struggle to go back to an N/A powered car now in all honesty. Good on the track when you want to keep it in the power range, but for normal driving, meh.

I ran an FD2 for a few years (sort of the DC5's successor). If you crave real grunt, these cars are not for you. Having said that, a supercharged DC5 will net you north of 320bhp, which with its lighter weight (1160 odd kgs) and only 2WD transmission losses will see off a lot of Imprezas once rolling. The real joy of these cars is a high-revving NA engine that loves to be thrashed mercilessly, an incredibly sweet gearbox and a very direct & agile driving experience. On a dry track, a well-driven standard DC5 can give a standard Impreza a run for its money. In the real world (wet/damp/greasy roads!) a DC5 will struggle due to limited grip and lack of midrange grunt. You really need to drive one and see for yourself

Still a nice looking car wouldn't bother tuning one I did and it was just a wast of money,

Very good handling car plus it's 300+kg lighter than the Subaru.

cheers guys, so if I was going on a track then yes, aside from that then ide be disappointed coming from a turbo'd car. going off the pics it has no rear wiper so I'm guessing no 'C Pack' option

Eh? Not quick compared to what? Low 6s to 60 and 150 mph is quick compared to most cars on the road.

As for drifting, I can only imagine you're taking the **** or something. One of the best handling fwd cars ever, it does not do going sideways!

Drive them properly (i.e. use the bloody gearbox and let it scream) and they're brilliant fun, just like all JDM Honda Type R cars are.

They are also astonishingly reliable - the Mrs having had one for 8 years until changing for an FD2.

hmmm food for thought, Honda reliability is a good point.. drifting a FWD ? like I say ive never been in one nor owned a Honda aside from a 2.2 prelude for about 3 days. looks wise I think the dc5 is one of if not the best looking of the Type R range.. need to have a think and maybe go out in it. what do these cars go for in todays market. 04 jdm with approx. 58000 miles on

I've owned a DC5 and 3 DC2's and I still own a mint JDM 98' spec DC2 that I've owned for years. The DC5 is like going to a hatch after owning a newage, the DC2 is a proper car with so much feed back. DC2 is by far a better track car as well and will be a collectors car one day IMO.

I like the dc2 but prefer the look of the dc5 its probably like newage v classic impreza. The classic being much more raw i suppose like the dc2
