Default Buying a clio sport

Had a look at a Clio 172 cup, just wanted to check on here a few things

1/ There was no spare wheel but noticed after research the cup's don't have them, no boot carpet?

2/ No service history, not had a service for a a few years need to check if has any receipts for oil change

3/ Whining noise coming from drivers side of engine sounds like rear, but went quieter after 1 min, found video on youtube and think it sounds the same as that

4/ Apart from that all looked ok, cambelt was done not long ago

Whining from the engine?

Just wait till you experience all the squeaks and rattles from the interior!

I certainly wouldn't buy one without service history, I've seen a few examples recently with history and seem to have been looked after well.

Service history would worry me.

Whining is power steering pump and is normal. Could be the dephaser pulley but wouldn't quiet down after a min if it was.

Cups come with a couple of cans of tyre foam and no spare wheel.

Who did the timing belt? This is the one thing that will more often than not be done wrong and so the timing will be out sapping power from the engine. It won't feel as strong over 5k.

Yea the no service history did bother me, you could tell it had been abit neglected. Looked like cambelt had been done by decent garage bill came to over £400 it did say there was damage to something else and that was replaced aswell, but didn't say dephaser pulley.

He was asking £1500 for it, oil is black but seen worse. Looks like only had work done when needed it. Although spent out aload on rear shocks and brakes.

With cars that old and in that price range I don't worry too much about what history it's got although it's nice if it does have something, but in this computer age we live in it doesn't take more than a hour to knock up a very comprehensive service history.

You have to take it at face value on the day as all the stamps and receipts in the world won't make it a good car.

Use the lack of any history as a bargaining tool, I'd be saying sorry pal it's a £1k car in my eyes, if he won't play ball walk away, no shortage of £1/2k Clios.

Lol cheers for advice, you are right, only thing that bothers me is if its had an oil change in the last few years, the oil was black on the stick and i struggled to remove the oil cap, felt like it hadn't been of in sometime

If he'd had some proof of oil changes, i think i would have offered him £1000, but with that and short mot i think its put me off

That £400 for cam belt and dephaser seems a bit cheap, my guess is not the full shilling was done as it costs a min of £500+ as a specialist as they are a ball to do and NEEDS to be done right. (This is the main thing you need, or factor it in off the price)
Service history is no biggie IMO for a cheap car but it does help, I do a full service anyway when I buy a car just for peace of mind.
The rest is just general checks.

Just to re-iterate: if the Cambelt hasn't been done by a specialist with the right locking tools the timing can be out and your down on the power. For a few extra hundred I'm sure you could get a decent example.

Nice one, what milage did it have?

I do the same full service with any new car, i couldn't see anything about dephaser, but few other things had been replaced at the sametime, one thing it said was damaged. Wish i could remeber.

It about about just under 100k.

It really needs dephaser too with ca belt change by a Renault specialist (this is the main thing you need or factor it in with price) saying it had something else done with belt and then totalling to £400 seems cheap.
The rest is just general checking car properly.
It's French so will have some funny dash lights showing but reasonably diagnosed to silly things.

Cambelts are not an easy job on these cars unlike the subaru, and the dephaser needs to be replaced at the same time, well should be.

£400 sounds incredibly cheap

Sounds like you got a good price.

It had no dash lights, all seemed ok, but it hadn't been serviced in a while you could tell that, i've decided to leave it. I can't understand people who buy cars and never service them. My mate bought a cheap Punto for a run around, was a total wreck, when doing oil change in came out like tar.
