Default 2.5k runabout?

I'm looking for more ideas on a runabout with a max limit of £2500.

Needs to be reliable obviously, fairly good mpg around 35+ and ideally have some mod cons like AC and electrics. Not bothered on petrol or diesel, manual where possible.

Currently I'm fixated on a fiat panda 100hp but open to other ideas

In the same boat but with £2k as an absolute max and it better be something special for that, spent most of yesterday looking but doesn't seem to be much about at the min. what looks good locally in the adds is absolute shoit in the flesh.

Great minds, I went to look at a 172 yesterday in Kirkby in Ashfield, cat C but only got 50k on the clock and up for £1190, no history beyond 28k and the front doesn't line up along with front right wheel rubbibg arch liner and rather oily drive shaft and steering rack, strange dents/ creases in the boot floor, just wasn't worth the risk.

Do fancy a go cart though and give the Mrs the Blob for a year.

Yeah I know, but I wouldn't bother going, bit of a dodgy looking outfit operating out of a warehouse full of ropey looking cars, I recon they buy all the crap, tart em up a bit and sell them to mugs.

I would go for something like a honda civic executive if you want reliable. Very reliable and you'll get heated leather etc.

Passat diesels and such are all very well but when they go wrong they can be very expensive.

People get blinkered by the diesel mpg cheap running costs theory but you pay more for the car, more for the fuel and if anything goes wrong, which is quite likely with these modern diesels, you'll be wincing at some of the prices. I don't think you'll beat a reliable jap, petrol, small engine motor for overall running costs.

Well I think I may have found the new one for my mrs, another Rover 25, well not quite but an MG ZR 1.4 55 plate with 50k had the HG done and for the princely sum of around £700.

Going for another as the current one has done her 70k for about £500 plus tyres and can sit on the drive while I strip it for spares, may even pull the engine out it's been that good, then weigh the shell in.

Just need to go see it on monday, if all's well I'll be driving it home.

Get a 100HP, it's fun and loves to rev. If you drive on bumpy roads it feels bouncy on the OEM shocks but Konis help improve things.
It corners like it's on rails.

Apprectice recently passed his test and was on about what car to have. Cheap etc.

He's learnt that anything post-2000 French is bad news (good lad ). So he's rolled up an MG-ZR...I could think of alot worse, as at least they are cheap and simple to fix.

OK it sounds like its got uneven compressions on a cold start (suspect collapsed lifters - probably been overheated in the past), but once running its fine. Although he's more focused on fixing the radio than fixing the starting problem...kids eh? LOL
