Brake recomendations for a 3-door Cosworth.
#1
Hi,
I'm going to the 'ring in July with some of youse lot and I need some new brakes as the ones I have are warped to ****. I cant go oversize as I have the original 15" crosspokes on the car. Any recomendations as to a fast road disc/pad combination which works?
Price is not that important but as they need to work for 14 miles fade resistance is!
anyone?

Hispec do loads of conversions and can make bespoke kits.I managed to get 300mm discs and billet 4 pots under my 15" wheels but there is sod all clearance so I've bought a spare set(with spacers) for track use.I wouldn't bother with just upgrading to drilled/grooved as I think you'll be disappointed with the marginal improvement(comparing new OE to new aftermarket)in stopping distances-I was when I took this route and they won't hold fade off for that much longer than standard ones on a circuit.

EBC Red stuff pads & grooved discs transformed both my Legacy Turbo and my 2.8 XR4x4. The XR especially was crap on the standard fit Ford Anglia bits (still on 14' 7 spokes), I was putting 2-3 sets of discs a year on her because they kept warping, the EBC's have done 6k so far and no problems.
The only reason I have taken them off the Legacy is because they don't fit in my shiny new 4 pots

I wore a set of (properly bedded in) redstuff pads out in 30 mins on track-down to the metal and beyond. Two nice holes through one backing plate and a cracked 4 pot caliper followed.Maybe they've changed the compound since then, but I won't be buying redstuff again.
To get a decent increase in stopping distances, the least you're going to have to do is either fit bigger discs(pref with an alloy bell, though they don't normally manufacture them for disc sizes under 285mm)and/or better multipot calipers.I understand the 4 pot calipers on cosworths aren't one of the car's strongpoints,so if money is no object.....

I forgot to mention, I have also run cold air ducting from round the foglight housings back to the hubs, a bitch of a job on the XR, but 10 minutes work on the scoob. On both cars it does make a difference fade wise and Olly can vouch for the fact that I know how to seriously abuse a set of brakes

I've just been reading an old copy off CCC, mourning the death of the Escort Cossie, in it was a contemporary review of the original 3 door in which they praised the performance of the brakes. They always did have rose-tinted glasses where Fords were concerned.
I've never yet driven a Ford whose brakes were anything other than the cheapest sh1te they could get away with fitting.
