Default E46 M3 CS vs Cayman S vs E92 M3

I know I should be finishing my wagon build but I've had 182s for three years now and want something a bit more grown up; I'm old now and don't need hatch practicality as I'm too broken to ride my BMX properly any more...fancy one of these. Well I think I do...opinions welcome, particularly those who have owned any of the above

I think you would be happiest with the E92 M3 with a DCT box, though it will only be a hooligan at the very top end of the rev range.

The E46 is dated in comparison to the other two cars and cant really comment on the cayman, though if its anything like a boxster it will be a pretty fun drive.

Cheers Banny...want to stay with this type of car so I won't be too tempted to start modding it.

I sold my m3 as my scoob was more fun, note fun not faster. My m3 was remapped and was seriously quick , refined etc but I think the v8 one would be the best of both worlds.

That's what I'm thinking about the E46 in CS spec...I know my wagon will be faster than my daily and tbh I don't want anything quicker than a 500bhp classic

According to those who've owned the E92 M3 in the M5 thread, they're not that great. I was in a similar boat to you a recently, had a 182 Trophy, great car, but wanted something a little more refined but still provide a bit of fun and, eventually, tunability. I settled with an E82 135i (N54), I would have bought Cayman S and even toyed with the idea of a 987 Boxter, but needed the rear seats. For me, the E46 M3 is getting on a bit now and a lot have high mileage.

There is a lot of crashed and clocked e46 M3's about so make sure you choose wisely if your buying one.

Cayman is supposed to be one of the best-handling out-of-the-box cars you can buy. Haven't tested one, but if I was looking for something in the £15K- £25K bracket where practicality isn't important, it would be right at the top of my list.

S2000 if you want a drivers car, at £7k for a nice one leaves you another £8/18k before your into caymen money, a supercharger kit can take the standard internals to 500bhp which they handle no problem.

500bhp and RWD = MENTAL & FUN.

Cheers for the replies chaps...thinking £25k tops budget wise but then I may have to put my Grand Designs workshop/garage on hold for a little longer

135 might be a goer...will have look Jon, ta

Will be careful whichever I go for tho, last thing I want is another project!

Cayman is a great choice but bore scoring issues are a worry...if I were going two seat rag top I'd probably scratch my Elise itch

Get my real kicks from the wagon so the Ginetta is way too extreme for going anywhere other than the track, thanks for the suggestion though

One of my friends has had one for 4 years now, lovely thing but not really what I'm after; want to be as un-paranoid as I can be just using it as a daily

You'd probably get a 987.2 Cayman with the DFI engine for £25k, so no reliability issues. Don't discount a Boxster either if you fancy a rag top, probably the best all round convertible you can buy! Buy either from an OPC and you get a 2 year warranty for peace of mind.
