Don't forget that Subaru won it for the 2.5 turbo in the 2008 STI hatch once.

It was 2006 for the WRX and Forrester 227BHP engine

Yes but those engines didn't blow up quite as much.

I do wonder what how they are assessed as the STI engine that won in 2008 was very thirsty and had very high emissions.

Even though there have been some rumours of reliability issues with the new Mercedes unit it has quite unbelievable fuel consumption and CO2 output given the power it can chuck out.

Funnily enough I was discussing with a friend how Mercedes seem to be the most common marque on recovery trucks, or stranded at the side of the road.

I do a lot of miles a year and the newer Mercs seem to be the most commonly broken down.

It's the VW/Audi's that I always see at the side of the road

Are there any stats to back up your claimed fact that Mercedes are more likely to break down than ANY other marque in the UK?

Obviously my question has nothing to do with the fact that I've just bought one

Nope, might just be coincidence. My mate drives a similar amount and agreed with me though. It's just something I've noticed over recent years, some days I'm driving 6 hours a day.

I drive around all day everyday 5 days a week, and tbh you see your fair share of everything. (You'll see what you want to see).

If your mate agrees then it must be true.

According to Warranty Direct, Mercedes-Benz are among the leading manufacturers in terms of engine reliability.

Yeah, yeah

Apologies for having an opinion that differs from your own!

The warranty info would be based on older cars anyway, it was just a notable amount of new Mercs I'd noticed. We were actually discussing the fact you don't see all that many broken down cars these days compared to years ago. (we're both in the motor trade doing maintenance and repairs) I then mentioned the Merc thing and he worked at a dealer looking after recovery trucks and hence the conversation.

I'm on my third Merc now and all have been very reliable. In 10 years none has ever broken down needing recovery (I'm touching wood). Using a specialist rather than a Mercedes dealer they have all been relatively inexpensive to run too. Much less so than the Impreza which is just a money pit.
The major problem with all of them has been rust, although the latest one seems less affected (so far anyway). I can't honestly say I've seen many marooned by the side of the road though.

Well here is mine, just picked her up today. What an engine! I'm not sure it should win any awards though, the fuel economy is shocking

We've had some shocking reliability problems over the years, suspension going on one car, one had a dreadful problem with water coming into the cabin, failed gearboxes, one failed engine.

But they are good cars most of the time.

Cripes, most of the time? That sounds like a bunch of scary failures, I think you should have a medal for your stick-at-it!

It's my father who's been daft enough to keep buying them all of these years, I've never actually owned a Merc.

Still had the same problems, mind.

The engine failures I've had have been on a 911 and a 2.5 Hawk, and the gearbox went on a Golf

One thing to bear in mind is that a manufacturer may have a very reliable range of engines, but a low selling one may have a very high failure rate among that model, or a single model that sells very highly may cause the marque to have a bad reputation that is undeserved.

Thing is, with Mercs, when they go wrong, they go wrong big style.

I mean. I have never come across a car whereby the entire front section wiring loom and ECU are contaminated with engine oil from a leaky sensor, I mean how the hell engine oil can wick up 3metres of wire via two connectors, then into the other wires on the ECU connector and to every component that is wired to it is a pretty impressive failure.

Well, Ok, I lie...that usually happens to French cars and the odd Land Rover - but that's the norm for them, usually its diesel or water/coolant and only goes as far as one connector...The Merc does it German style by wrecking the whole loom and everything attached to it

(SLK Kompressor if anyone is interested )

I'll get some pics up later today. As it's a black estate it does look a bit like a hearse from some angles

Ted, I'm really liking it. The steering is lovely, much much better than a V8 M3 for example. The engine needs no introduction from me, it is fantastic.

What has really surprised me though is the gearbox. In 'S' mode it is so responsive that it almost feels like witchcraft how it knows exactly what I want to do in a split second.

You must be gagging to get hold of your new car
