Oh sorry, you said cheap and good!! lol That counts them lot out!!!!

On a more serious note,it's worth speaking to Dennis Murphy who used to be head mechanic at Mainland before it 'closed'...
I'll text you his mobile number. He has premises in Widnes according to Ian J!!

Good luck

Thanks Nick!

Actually, I've spent the afternoon taking a good look at the car and it isn't the clutch, it's the slave cylinder. The piston has popped out and then wedged itself againt the body of the cylinder.

Should be a lot cheaper than doing the whole clutch!

Rev, are you sure it's just the slave cylinder?
In my experience, if the piston pops out it's usually due to a clutch problem rather than hydraulics. It can only pop out if the clutch release arm travels too far due to clutch wear or mechanical failure.
If you fit a new cylinder, chances are it will pop out again.

Was your clutch slipping recently or was there any strange noises when you pressed your pedal down?

Big_G, the clutch was working fine prviously (apart from the judder, but then it's a Helix organic paddle clutch so judder is expected ). The only noise from it was the pop when the pedal dropped to the floor.

The seal on the piston had gone so I'm guessing unequal pressure has forced it out at an angle (it wasn't out all the way, it had just jammed itself in the cylinder body at an angle). Put it this way: if it is the clutch, it'll be up for sale as parts.

Actually, after posting this I had one of those enlightening moments. I've realised that the clutch release arm hasn't returned to the right position. Bugger. Looks like the clutch will be coming apart after all

I'd better sell the Clio quick.
