Exclamation Insurance requirements. Q for all

Does anyone know why I am being asked to send copies of paper counterpart and front / back of plastic license to my insurance brokers? Is this now a legal requirement?

The letter from Moleys company says "...if not received within 7 days your insurer will have no alternative but to cancel the policy"

I haven't got anything to hide but, being the cynical awld git that I am, I'm concerned that this PII could be used for nefarious purposes.

Oh, Moley, I tried to fax the said documentation earlier but it appears that your fax machine gets weekends off!

I think I may have done this last time, scanned and emailed. Wasn't problem

I'm wondering how many months/years you can go without insurance ( my cars blown up ) before losing your ncb

Generally 2 years mate. I've sent off copies of licence before not all insurance companies need it.

I wouldn't say it's a legal requirement but a requirement in the terms of the policy to have proof of your entitlement to drive and proof of any endorsements on license.

In fairness there's not much on your licence besides your photo, driving license number and confirmation of any points that they don't already know.

I'm sure that if they wanted to do anything nasty then they've already got plenty of personal info about you, your car and any security you have.

Unfortunately it's for anti-fraud purposes.

It's to check you don't have any un-disclosed convictions, how long you've had a licence, correct address etc.

It's not us who ask for them, it's the insurers.

For 95% of clients there are no issues, but we can't discriminate so we have to get a copy licence from all clients.

That's not bad - for my motorhome they want a urine sample!
I have to send them a bunch of documents every year - proper PITA.
But its cheap - so I put up with it.

I dunno. What's next?

After all the debacle with PII being sold off by Banks and the NHS farming out YOUR private healthcare records for money to insurance companies etc!

I hanker after the good old days when you had face to face meetings with your insurers / GP & Bank Manager etc.

It's just a bit too impersonal nowadays.

It's the flip side of our expectation to be able to access things in the manner and whenever suits us best.

Want to shop around for the best deal on insurance? Well, that company may be based in an office several hundred miles away from you so in the absence of the type of relationship you may once have had with a bank manager they deal only in proof, not trust.

The same is true of just about everything now and if you expect to take advantage of the technology and it's ability to help you do what you want to do when you want to do it then you must accept the concessions that go with it.

There's always the alternative, take a couple of days off work, drive to Moley's office and find a policy that suits taking with you all of your documents and once you've settled on an insurer drive to their office and present your documents personally.

Or you could just fax them over...

I can see why its done.

A work collegue's mum drives on a provisional licence...which she's had for the past thirty odd years. Her car is taxed, insured and MOT'd. Well, she "thinks" she' insured, becuase she's paid for it and they've accepted her. But of course she hasn't told her about the provisional licence and driving without being under supervision.

Yes, she has been told, by many people. But she still carries on.

A simple request for a copy of the driving license by her insurer would stop her in her tracks. Or better still the insurers having access to proper DVLA driver's records...a photocopied licence can easily be doctered by a good photoshopper (but in this case I don't think this 70yr old can photoshop ).

That works. Like the plan to remove tax discs as it's all online.

I don't want to speak out of turn but the huge majority of incidents I witness on the road appear to involve drivers that possibly do not originate from the UK.
