Default Unexpected V5

Strange one, just opened my post and I've received the V5 for the car I'm THINKING of buying?! The dealership (it's a main dealer not some dodgy secondhand dealer!) know I need to sell my car to raise the cash for the deposit for the new car but yet the car is now registered to me at my address!
How does this work?
Shame the V5 isn't proof of ownership otherwise I could be bagging myself a £30k+ car for flip all haha!!

Sounds like someone at the dealers has messed up somewhere.

I'd get on to them if I were you as the V5 may not be proof of ownership but it will be seen by the DVLA as proof of liability.

Good point, don't want any speeding tickets etc coming through my letter box!!

Was thinking I'd just go down to the girl at the service department and say I'm here to pick my car up from service. Give her the reg and show her the V5 and drive away haha.

It's not that. You may have a bill because you haven't paid to tax/Mot/insure it.

Don't give it to just anyone. Make sure the top dude there knows about it.

As above, you are now liable for the car in the eyes of the DVLA. I would ring the DVLA and explain too! Make sure you get a copy of the V5 before handing it to anyone!

Ring the DVLA and say that you are NOT the keeper.

There's all kinds of trouble coming your way unless you are able to sort it.

You will have an unisured car on your hands - the trade cover doesn't apply to you ... for example.

Spoke to the dealership and apparently the car is still registered as theirs as there is no invoice etc. so there's no need to worry. The V5 has only been sent out as they were under the impression I wanted it but fully understood I need my car to sell first. So they were jumping the gun slightly just to get everything in order WHEN my car does sell!

It's not the dealership you have to worry about.

They may know you don't own it but the DVLA doesn't.

Seems a bizarre way to do business.

I work for a VW dealership, Getting vehicles Sold/stock/trade/service ready and prepped etc. That is a very strange way of doing it but not unheard off.

Did you fill out the New owner's slip on the V5 for said vehicle?
Any money changed hands ??
Invoice or not, Cash in hand and a man's word still exists.

You are technically now liable for tax,Outstanding finance arrangements etc etc

Dealers quite often hold on to the V5 in the previous owner's name, then straight transfer on to the new owner once sold. Helps keep previous owner history down + Resale costs higher.

Yep. You are now liable to tax/SORN it, and also insure it if its not SORN'd (its now illegal not to have a uninsured car that is not SORN'd).

If it were my name on the V5. I'd take the current mileage of the vehicle and tell the dealership both verbal and in writing that it mustn't be driven an inch off the premises without my prior consent until my name is removed off the v5.

They may have done it out of ignorance/stupity, but that is no excuse to make you legally culpable for any offences that may be carried by anyone who now drives the car.

The DVLA should be able to address the issue of extra owners by amending the V5, at the dealer's cost - of course, but it may require a visit to a DVLA office to better explain the situation.
