Default Arai or Bell?

I'm in the market for my first Motorsport helmet and have been doing the rounds on demon tweeks comparing various models and pricing options.

I decided to go with a full face helmet as I want to be able to use it karting as well as for trackdays and eventually sprint races/hill climbs.

I know arai are still top dog compared to bell for amongst other things build quality but Bell have just released a mid-entry carbon lid which is catching my attention.

These are the 2 I'm looking at,

And

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motors...-2010-approved

So a couple hundred notes between them other than that any opinions?

In motorbike circles a phrase that is often used is "you either have an Arai head or a Shoei head" so with that in mind I suggest you get to a bike shop and try a few on and see which fits best.

I have a shoei head by the way.

Make sure you try before you buy.

Bike helmets are NOT motorsport helmets.

The regs are different for bike and car helmets and so is the design.

My advice.

Buy the best one you can afford. You only get one head!!

I think you will find that both Arai and Shoei have the square gold motorsport lable on them that is perforated into four segments one for each drop or off when all four are gone time to buy a new helmet, that's what I was told many moons ago.

The gold sticker is meaningless in car racing. That's an ACU sticker for bike racing.

If you drop a helmet you 'may' have compromised it's safety and it shouldn't be used again.

They are both good quality, comfort and fit will be the most important considerations.

Have a chat to Merlin Motorsport. They have been a mine of info on all things car related when I have called. They also have the Race School at Castle Combe.

Not sure which one I'd go for but as stated above go and try them both on for fit and comfort.

Once you've decided get them to fit HANS posts if not already fitted and buy a HANS device.

I'm sure he would have as much protection regardless of what he buys, unless he needs to get it past scrutineering, if it's just for track days I wouldn't worry too much.

As for a dropped helmet that's why they say peel one qtr off, but it would also depend how much of a drop it gets, I was always told "they don't fall off the floor" so that's where I always put mine.

But I bow to your knowledge on car racing though.

P.s, OP i'd go full face everytime too.

I've always used Sparco helmets ( Open face with fitted Peltor intercom) but was recently looking at the latest Bell equivalent and it was a very nice helmet. Stilo helmets are good too.

The important thing is to get one that is the correct fit and is comfortable.

Yes I've looked at the Stilo lids to, also a nice helmet. I think I need to take a trip to a dealer to try a few on, then take it from there.
