Long shot - importing a car into Aus
As some of you know I am intending to emigrate to Australia in 2015. I have answers to most of the issues I can foresee, but not to this one.
If I wanted to take my AMG I know how much it costs to transport and insure whilst in transit, but I can't get a definitive answer on import costs i.e. duty, sales tax and luxury car tax.
I can find the calculations, but the customs value of the car is the sticking point.
Is it valued on what its worth here or what its worth there? The regs say something about if I buy it with the sole puprose of importing it then the value is on the pruchase price, but if I have used it prior to importing it then it will need a valuation by Austrlian customs.
The trouble is cars are way more expensive there than here so if it is valued at Aus pices it won't be worth me taking it.
Anyone got any ideas? A long shot I know, but worth a try

Yes there expensive, but its relative, your £ is worth about 1.3 more than here...
You need to do a like for like cost comparison here / there , then factor in your shipping / import charges.
Base it on best case and worst case, and go midway,
BTW if its a gas guzzler, its not cheap out there, my BIL has a 4.0 ford SUV its expensive to run prices have gone up a fair bit in the last year or so.
On the plus side, no more MOT's

5% import duty ($2300) + 10% GST ($5230) = $7530 AUD
Note the GST is based on the car value + shipping/insurance costs as that is how they calculate it.
If my car is valued at Aus prices it's worth about $110K AUD which means I will pay
5% import duty ($5500) + 10% GST ($11950) + Luxury car tax ($21340) = $38790
As you can see this makes a massive difference.
My guess is it will be the latter as otherwise what is to stop people importing cars there like this all the time and making a killing by selling them!
My problem is I like my car and have got it how I want it so would like to take it with me!

So you can either sell it here for $46k before you leave, or sell it there for $110k after an upfront cost of $39k
Surely a no brainer if you can afford the initial outlay

Think I may have to 'buy it' again just before I export it

I'd say at a guess they will be the same as here in Croatia i.e, local value and then tax accordingly, otherwise no one would buy a car there they would all import.
I have a few mates out there and they all love it, i'm more of a New Zealand fan my self.
Scoobs are cheap out there.

The boy lives in Adelaide and paid 30$ for his Suzuki swift sport as against
14k here
We were looking b the Subaru dealership
STi was a whopping 68$ against 27k when UK sold them
Holden's and newts are popular and 10-15 k gets some amazing cars
All jap cars are expensive
The boy said my Greenwagon worth 2k in UK is 20$ in Aussie as they are
Sought after as classics
Lots of old cars over there and no rust neither
If I could start my life again I would be over like a shot and part of my
Retirement plans now are 5/6 months over there stopping on the boys
New house ( I will have to help him out so we get one big enough with a
Seperate living area for us ) and working part time 2/3 days per week which
Would gave us some pocket money to spend
