Despite reading this at least a hundred times on here no one has yet been able to tell me why leaving the EU would actually be catastrophic! The only reason I have ever seen is it would damage trade which is just scaremongering as business will be business reagrdless of politics despite the offical line from many companies. It's not like we are even in the Euro so the argument doesn't even come down to exchange rates.

A strange side-effect of our daft electoral system means...

Vote UKIP = Labour win = No referendum

Kind of ironic really

Yes, but vote UKIP and Cameron doesn't win.... far more important as he is trying to bribe the electorate and I seriously doubt it will happen anyway or if it does he will ignore any result that isn't what he wants! That's the trouble with politicians, no one trusts them... I wonder why

Absolutely.
It will either have the question asked in such a way as to make it easy for them to get the result they want, or they will ignore it.

When was the last time we ignored the result of a referendum?

How could that possibly happen?

I believe the question will be 'Do you think that the United Kingdom should be a member of the European Union?' - pretty straightforward me thinks

Yep, the voting form will look like this:

"Do you think that the United Kingdom should be a member of the European Union?'

Please choose from one of the answers below (any other answer or mark will be considered a spoilt ballot):

A. Yes

It may well be catastrophic...for the EU. Being as we are the third largest net contributor to this ponzi scheme, leaving would put a rather large dent in their, unaudited, budget

So how did we do business with European countries before we joined the EU ? Is there any evidence the UK has done more business since joining ?

I say leave the EU or play the same game that every other country seems to do - ie the we dont like that EU rule so we will ignore it and do what is best for our own country.

I only see Martins posts when people quote them (as I've blocked him), and I see I'm not missing anything, his usual level of fact free sneering seems unchanged.

So back to the OP, why is staying in the EU common sense and disastrous if we leave? The thought of having a say who lives here too much? The idea we can run a power station if we want to is too risky for us to make on our own? Maybe you're going with the 3 million jobs argument? Please say you are going with that, PLEASE!

**** me someone actually found the answer. There's very little if anything to be gained from leaving the EU, what we should do is play them at there own game and ignore the bits we don't like. Just like the Germans/French.

Like how we running our own country at the moment? Just because the EU says we should/shouldn't do something, doesn't actually mean we have to do it. Look at France/Spain/Germany, I'll give ya the saga of the European health card and Spanish hospitals as an example.

As for 'the power to remove governments'... Da ****?!

Yes I agree, that's my point. The EU runs us. The reason we follow the rules is that we believe in the rule of law being fair. Thats why its quite important to be able to set the rules!

Its what's supposed to happen every 5 years in this county, if we don't like a Gvmt we ditch them. Supposed to prevent revolution, which is what happens when the plebs don't get a say in things. However if we give the power to Brussels we cant do SFA about changing the Gvmt....

The EU only runs us because the government decides to play ball. That being said as a relative outsider, flaunting the rules is more difficult.

Nope you've lost me there. We're not talking about handing more powers over to Europe.

The best argument to stay in is the CBI consistently say we are better in than out. The CBI represent business which provides jobs, and gives us a living.

The big problem being that you end up with a UKIP government!

I was reading some of their trash the other day, apparently they will treble the size of the Royal Navy. One has to wonder why, to keep people out or to prevent a mass exodus
