Every year, without fail I get a split bottom lip, same place every time. With the cold weather now in place, I had a nice big smile the other day and it went and split so I now have a split lip next for next 4 or 5 months.

any recommendations for a repair balm, don't care what they cost, just hope they work.

and yes, I am in touch with my femanine side

I'd recommend a petroleum jelly based balm with something soothing in it such as aloe Vera. Some of them contain vitamin E and all sorts, it won't do any harm. I'd avoid heavily scented cosmetic products as they tend to be thinner. Any of the brands at boots or your chemist will do.

The reason your lips usually split is because the vermillion desiccates and tears.

All you need to do is stop them drying out with non permeable barrier. Apply fairly liberally and ensure an even but thin distribution over the whole surface of the lip, and top up when you feel like they're going dry again.

If it persists for more than a couple of weeks with that treatment go and see your GP or dentist

Blistex, in a white plastic tube, it's effective and non-greasy. Has a bit of a medicinal taste but gives instant relief.

Try vaseline. You can just get the pot of it, or if you want, you can get little tins of their lip balm. I've always found that better than the likes of lypsyl etc.

I just use vaseline. Nothing beats it. My skin goes dry in this weather and my lips starts to crack. I just use vaseline and puts loads on at night before bed and use vaseline moisturiser in morning and my whole days goes well without even topping up and I work in warehouse with all dirt and cement crap in the ar and skin stays well.

I get dry lips, especially in the winter and I've found this to be the best, I almost swear by it. It might sound and look gay but it is the best I've tried. It's so good that one time I went to the pub with my mates and someone told me I had nice lips!! I kid you not! After a couple months of using it, you should have luscious lips.



You can't get it in the shops so you'll have to order it off the net.

Because dentistry is not limited to the teeth and jaws alone and concerns the treatment of hard and soft tissues in and around the oral cavity.

Cut your lip open and go to hospital, you'll more likely than not be treated by a dentist who decided to follow a pathway outside of general practice

The bloke that did my lip and bits was a trainee ( I didn't know )and did a fantastic job
Can't see anything on my lip , well pleased
Even the top bods were impressed and asked if I minded going to show him
But I suppose it was a little job to them
I'm chuffed with his work though

Yeah that chap would have been a plastics (doctor) or maxillofacial (dentally qualified) trainee most likely.

Strictly speaking when you see a dentist they should be assessing the health of the tissues of your head and neck, including lips, lymph nodes of the neck etc.

So yeah any dentist worth his salt will know a fair bit about lips and how to treat them

.........used to sew up a shed load of split lips plus other things in the Casualty Dept at Bristol Royal Infirmary back in the 80's.

If they are a real pain and classed a chronic lip fissures they can be lasered or frozen / cryo'd to improve

Yep, no secret. Qualified 1982 from The London, various hospital jobs including oral surgery, ended up in Manchester as a University Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry and switched to the NHS Side and now the Consultant in Restorative Dentistry here in Carlisle........... covering the half a million people in Cumbria and Southern Scotland so busy most of the time.

I suspect your sirname begins with a "W" Good going becoming a hospital consultant it's an extraordinary amount of work.

My father qualified in '82!

I qualified Manchester six years ago, had no interest in general practice whatsoever. I had this idea that all dentistry was small time and that surgery would be far more stimulating.

Straight out of VT and into the nearest Max Fax unit. MFDS and MJDF, every course I could go on. Worked part time in practice to fund my Subaru... lol.

Two years of SHO, nearly took a place at Cambridge to study medicine but did not fancy four years and those fees. Would have had to sell my car too!

Worked as a middle grade for two more years, got a three year course at Manchester and moved to Preston where I'd start... and then thought "what the hell am I doing, where is my life?" and moved into a family practice.

Bit different to chopping lumps out of people and to be honest I miss the thrill of the big procedures, I saw a lot and did a lot of things that I'd not go anywhere near doing in a dental surgery but the skills I picked up in Max Fax have set me up for life. Currently loving 9-5, working around 50/50 NHS and Private. Recently invested a fair whack in some endo kit but feeling drawn towards Perio and Implants, got a very strong grounding in oral surgery for obvious reasons!

May be starting a Masters in 2015 at UCLAN but I'm not in a hurry. I'm just enjoying my job and lifestyle at the moment. Think I've got a good work/life balance.

Got a very strong interest in postgraduate learning and development, no coincidence that the practice I work in is about 500 yards from UCLAN school of dentistry.

But yes, I know my way around a lip. And probably about as far down as the sternum before I'd start asking for help
